Excited to be part of an insightful webinar hosted by PAMCA Pan-African Mosquito Control Association on the Sterile Insect Techniques(SIT)🦟🦟 Exploring the principles and applications of SIT was truly enlightening. The discussion highlighted innovative strategies to combat mosquito-borne diseases. One thing that stood out to me was how the Sterile Insect Technique uses irradiation to sterilize male insects, thus reducing the population through decreased offspring. I learnt about the importance of understanding the biological characteristics needed for SIT to work effectively, like the role of sexual reproduction and being holometabalous. Learning about the challenges that could complicate SIT implemenation such as parthenogenesis shows the importance of careful monitoring in real-world applications. When implemented strategically, SIT has the potential to drive the mosquito insect population to extinction in 4-5 generations, as proven by Knipling's theoretical basis. A key barrier to scaling Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) for mosquito suppression is efficient sex-sorting (aka. removing biting female mosquitoes). Synvect’s sex-sorting tool, SEPARATOR, leverages fluorescence to accurately mark male from female larvae enabling early stage, high-throughput sex-sorting. Early removal of females saves resources for production of a larger number of male mosquitoes. Since male mosquitoes do not bite, they are sterilized and released at mass into the environment for mosquito suppression programs. See below to learn more about how it works!
