Most People Want 2 Things From Life After 20 years of working in development, I’ve realized that beyond basic survival (food, shelter, safety) most people yearn for two things: 1️⃣ to feel valued and respected 2️⃣ to belong to something greater than themselves Both things are linked to having some sense of purpose and importance, whatever that looks like across age groups and professions. And I’ve found this to be true across rich and poor, young and old, geography and gender. I've started feeling very strongly that this is the lens through which we should be addressing human development initiatives, especially Education. Too many initiatives are top-down, focused on quantitative input KPIs and accountability measures. Too few keep the emotions, needs and incentives of human beings, particularly teachers, at the center of design. The big mental shift I’ve had to make from the nonprofit world to entrepreneurship is that I can no longer just design programs funded by someone else and forcefully implement them. When you charge for a product, you understand that people will only use it and pay for it if it genuinely adds value to their lives. And yes, behaviour change is incredibly hard, but it’s much more likely when you’re giving your target audience something they actually want/need, and in the process you can make them feel valued, respected and part of a bigger vision. We just finished an English language summer program for teachers and students at Beaj Education. We’re getting rave reviews - will share soon! But I’m pretty sure the reason we get love from our community and customers is because we design and modify to meet their needs, listen to them, and appreciate them. Unfortunately for our target market, that seems to be rare. #learning #respect #education #pakistan #internationaldevelopment

𝙒𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙖 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙜𝙚𝙩, 𝙬𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙖 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙗𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚 Developing a learning programme for an underserved community whose daily vernacular is distinct is unquestionably a difficult task that demands considerable perseverance and expertise to engage. From approaching the kids on the first day, inviting them to eat together with the volunteers, engaging them in hands-on activities to capture their interest, to managing them to ensure everything is in control seems physically exhausting. Nevertheless, this learning programme was efficiently done by a teamwork effort comprised of approximately 40 Altusians, at Kampung Orang Asli Buloh Telor, Kuala Kubu Bharu. After a 3-time visit to the village, last Saturday, we have finally wrapped up our learning programme that is part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives with the indigenous children. The satisfaction of giving back and contributing to society is indeed unparalleled. Giving of our time, talent or treasure knows no season–ripples of impact can be made each and every day of our lives. With this programme, Altus demonstrated its ongoing commitment to rekindle a culture of giving back within its workforce by organising a variety of events that would benefit deserving communities. Remember that one life can, and always does, change the world. #csr #givingback #corporatesocialresponsibility #volunteering #indigenouspeople #indigenousknowledge #learningthroughplay #altusmalaysia
