Informed Consent: Empowering Your Birth Experience. Have you ever felt completely out of your depth during a conversation, especially in a medical setting? I certainly have. When asked if they can break your waters to speed things up, are you going to question it? Asking about the benefits and implications of that decision is essential for making an informed choice. Informed consent is crucial for your birth experience. If your midwife or doctor suggests something and you’re feeling unsure, don’t hesitate to ask: “What are the benefits of this intervention?” Understanding their reasoning empowers you to make the best decision for yourself and your baby. Your body, your birth, your choices! Remember, it’s okay to ask questions and advocate for yourself. You deserve to feel confident and informed every step of the way. A new concerning report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that U.S. babies being delivered preterm (before 37 weeks) are on the rise. Since 2014, preterm births have jumped to nearly 8.7% in 2022, a 12% increase from 2014. The study also found that this was disproportionately impacting Black women. Black mothers were almost twice as likely as white mothers to give birth early. Preterm births account for more than 1 in 5 of all deaths of children occurring before their 5th birthday. In addition, children born preterm are more likely to suffer lifelong health conditions leading to more frequent hospital visits. There are several factors at play here that could be leading to an increase in preterm births, including women having children later in life, and preexisting conditions like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Another big factor – access to care. In our current health system, gaps exist for certain people, resulting in suboptimal prenatal care and education leading to these poor health outcomes for infants. At Carrot Fertility we believe that by providing access to vetted educational resources, medical experts to supplement in-person care, and coverage of doulas, we can close some of these gaps in prenatal care and pregnancy education and help to decrease the number of preterm births. https://lnkd.in/gPTKfPZd #CDCdata #pretermbirths #premature #infants #maternalhealth #pregnancy
