If you’ve spent any time near a charger with me, you’re likely familiar with my stance on charger screens. The focus should be on customer perception, particularly since vehicle information clusters already provide key data such as current, voltage, and charge rate-that isn’t affected by outdoor conditions. Much of the additional information displayed is redundant. While some argue it’s necessary for diagnostics, technicians are equipped with laptops, and remote diagnostics prove it’s not required for the end user. Ultimately, the primary concern for consumers is that their vehicle is charged. Anything beyond that risks introducing unnecessary complexity and slowing widespread adoption.

🚗🔌 **Another Public Charging Issue in the Wild!** This morning, while searching for a charger, Rodney Booth and I came across a ChargePoint Level 2 charger at a nearby hotel. Unfortunately, I discovered the screen was damaged. Here's a prime example of the industry's favorite term "charger uptime" being problematic. The screen may be down, but according to the OCPP messages, there's nothing stopping the charger from dispensing energy. However, if I were a new EV driver pulling up, my first instinct would tell me this charger is out of order due to the “broken look.” How many charge sessions have been missed because of this misleading appearance? This brings me to a bigger point: Uptime isn't just about functionality—it's about user perception. How many drivers have avoided this charger because it didn’t look operational? How many transactions haven’t even had a chance to occur? Over time, I've come to realize that screens in EV charging stations aren't necessarily needed. Sure, they can be flashy and cool (I remember being impressed by the first Volta charger I saw!). But let’s face it—Tesla nailed it with their charging network by relying on VIN/vehicle ID for authentication and billing. No screens, no service calls for malfunctions. The damage to this screen? My guess is a frustrated driver. If you look closely, you can almost see the outline of a knuckle—proof that EV driver frustration is real! This is yet another example of why the industry needs to bring the charging experience closer to what we’re used to at gas stations—simple, reliable, and UNCOMPLICATED. It’s time we focus on the experience, not just the hardware. #EV #ElectricVehicles #ChargingInfrastructure #EVcharging #TechInnovation #Sustainability

In EV systems where electrical noise is high and reliability is key, there is a need for a more robust protocol that handles these harsh conditions. An isolated Serial Peripheral Interface (#SPI) is an adaptation that retains the advantages of SPI whilst being electrically isolated.
