Kurigram is a riverine district. It faces significant educational challenges, especially in the char areas. With 16 rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Tista, and Dharla, and over 400 small and large chars, there is no secondary-level school or madrasa in these remote regions. As a result, many students drop out after primary education, and their dreams of pursuing higher studies are prematurely cut short. This has a detrimental impact on the overall education and socio-economic conditions of the district. While several primary schools operate with minimal students and hired teachers, the absence of high schools in char areas is the primary reason for the high dropout rates. Students must travel long distances and cross single or multiple rivers to reach mainland schools. Due to transportation difficulties and the lack of accommodation, many who enroll in high school eventually drop out. The district's literacy rate is officially 65%, but in char areas, poverty and unemployment are rising due to low education levels. At WIDE ANGLE Foundation, we are striving to reduce the dropout rates in these underserved areas. This year, we aim to provide shelter, meals, and educational support for at least 10 students.
