Thousands of doctors across India have taken to the streets in solidarity and outrage, ever since the assault and murder of a 31-year-old resident in Kolkata. These are reels from the Independence Day, the date on which India celebrates its freedom — which has become the day for them to highlight just how perversely un-free women in India are, even now, 78 years later. The tragic incident, which occurred at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has ignited nationwide unrest, with medical professionals demanding justice and safety in their workplaces. As the protests spread to other cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Patna — the nation joins these doctors in calling for action to ensure the safety of women. Rajasthan - List of Senior Citizens Care Homes The 33 districts of Rajasthan have about 35-40 Senior Citizens Care Homes which comes to 1 Elderly Care Home per district. In my personal research, Rajasthan has a collective Assisted Living bed capacity of 2700 for an estimated Elderly population size of 6.8 million (68 lakhs), which comes to 1 bed for 2500 older persons. If one has to go by the National recommendations of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment then each district should have one Senior Citizens Care Home of 150 beds, which comes to 4950 beds for Rajasthan which is far less than the present 2700 beds. Sharing a list of Care Homes / Assisted Living / High Dependency Care Homes in Rajasthan (36 Care Homes) for the benefit of the larger cause which was compiled last year. Since the database is my personal research hence it could and will have research errors, hence it is requested of everyone that incase of additions / deletion / corrections kindly share your feedback so that as concerned citizens we can develop a verified and open source database. Chhattisgarh - List of Senior Citizens Care Homes The 28 districts of Chhattisgarh have about 5-7 Senior Citizens Care Homes which comes to 0.18 Elderly Care Home per district. In my personal research, Chhattisgarh has a collective Assisted Living bed capacity of 300-350 for an estimated Elderly population size of 3.3 million (33 lakhs), which comes to 1 bed for 11500 older persons. If one has to go by the National recommendations of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment then each district should have one Senior Citizens Care Home of 150 beds, which comes to 4200 beds for Chhattisgarh. Unfortunately the existing bed capacity of 300 is way less than the 4200 beds required. As the harrowing details of the Kolkata incident get revealed, it becomes apparent that it was not an isolated case of gender based violence, but it was a brutal attempt at bludgeoning the very essence of humanity. Such incidents only bare the thread by which the entire medical and healthcare infrastructure of the country is hanging, which time and again becomes a noose around the neck of the healthcare professionals. The question we should be asking at this juncture is - is any place/profession/age/socieoeconomic strata safe for women in India? And the answer is a sad no! A lady doctor gets violated, raped and murdered while performing her 36 hour long shift in the state-run-hospital. Why was she working for 36 hours when there are laws that limit the working hours in government hospitals at 12 hours? Why did the Principal not lodge a FIR first given the fact that the murder happened in his organisation with an on duty employee? Why were the parents not allowed to see their deceased daughter for 3 hours after the news broke? Why did the Medical Superintendent try brushing the entire matter under the rugs by ruling it off as a case of suicide? Why were there no CCTV cameras installed in the hospital premises? Why was the principal reinstated within 4 hours of his resignation as principal of another hospital? Why were agitating students hit by the police? Such questions expose the systemic failures in India’s Healthcare infrastructure and the deplorable plight of state-run medical colleges and hospital. Not even a year back we saw the death of another promising young lady doctor Dr Vandana Das in the hands of a criminal while on duty. And now this. As the country celebrates its 78th Independece Day tomorrow, it is time for us to reiterate, are we indeed free? While we have achieved political freedom, we, as a nation, are yet to achieve freedom from fear, violence, and injustice. The recent brutal rape and murder of a PG medical student in Kolkata is a stark reminder that we are still far from true freedom. This tragedy follows a disturbing pattern of violence against women in the medical field, including the horrific cases of Aruna Shanbag, who was assaulted by a sweeper at the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Parel, Mumbai and left in a coma and the nurse who was raped by a ward boy at Shanti Mukund Hospital, Delhi and lost her sight due to the assault. In Kerala, we still remember Dr Vandana Das who was stabbed by an assailant at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital in Kollam, when he was brought to the hospital by the police for treatment. These incidents highlight a systemic failure to ensure safety for women in the workplace. Despite international laws protecting healthcare workers, our emergency service sector often remains vulnerable to violence. It is evident that stronger legal protections are needed to address violence against hospitals and healthcare workers.
