Today, we are in Brussels representing INNOAQUA Project at the ESPP event titled “ESPP Workshop: Algae, Wastes, and the Circular Economy,” alongside other colleagues from project partners (here and online). As work package leaders focusing on sustainability, safety and regulatory issues, we are working to prepare the project for upcoming regulations and staying informed about the latest developments in the regulatory status of algae and biomass produced using waste or animal by-products. The objectives of the workshop are to: 1. Identify significant regulatory obstacles and questions, in collaboration with policymakers, industry professionals, and experts, that may hinder circularity in nutrient recycling and carbon sequestration in algae production and the use of biomass for wastewater treatment. 2. Discuss how to tackle these challenges in the context of advancing the green and blue circular economy, while ensuring health and environmental safety and building confidence among stakeholders. How Microalgae Are Revolutionizing Wastewater Treatment ( and create circular resources) By using the natural abilities of algae, they enhance treatment processes, removing pollutants and recovering valuable nutrients from the water. This leads to cleaner, safer water while promoting environmental sustainability. Innovative projects, such as those by Proalgaetech, demonstrate how microalgae not only purify wastewater but also transform waste into valuable resources, supporting a circular economy. The produced algal biomass can be used for fertilizing, animal feed and as biostimulant provided the wastewater doesn't have heavy metals in it. Also applications for renewable chemicals, energy, building materials and bioplastics are promising.
