Mary Keilhauer, Civil Engineer from our MIG Denver office, is presenting at the Colorado Transportation Symposium on Thursday, March 28. From small towns to big cities, shared streets—also known as flexible streets, woonerfs, festival streets, park streets—continue to be a common planning strategy for revitalizing urban cores. But converting a traditional roadway to a shared street can be technically challenging to design and construct. In Mary’s session, “Dude, Where's my Curb? Design Considerations for Shared/Festival Street Master Planning,” participants will review case studies from Durango, Denver, Santa Barbara, San Antonio and Seattle in an effort to understand the technical challenges that should be considered when preparing master plans for curbless streets, and how early consideration of these challenges can ensure that the master plan vision is implementable and works for all users of the street.

An update from ACE Camden: The past two weeks have been filled with lots of learning. Two weeks ago, we explored the world of Structural Engineering and started understanding how to read construction drawings. Last week, we heard from two Urban Planners who shared what elements we need to consider when designing new communities or enhancing existing neighborhoods. Today, 12/20, is our last session of 2023. We will have two civil engineers come speak to us and we will give a preview of our design-build project that we will be starting in January. #TransformingDreams #ACE2023 #engageexciteenlighten #BuildingBrightFutures #MentorshipMatters #SupportAEC #BuildingTheFuture #BuildingDreams #MentoringFutureLeaders #buildingthenextgeneration #ACEPhilly2023

Continuing B&J's Civil Lunch & Learn Series, Civil Engineering Director Ed Melo, PE, QSD and engineers Casey Durham, and Carolina De Biase delivered an informative talk on how Low Impact Development (LID) is incorporated into projects with site size constraints like "Casa De La Luz" located in Los Angeles. With a pop of color, "Casa De La Luz" is making waves with its 5-story residential and retail design. With the building footprint occupying almost the entire area within project limits, the challenge lies in embracing required Low Impact Development practices with limited space. In this case – the solution is through an advanced Rainwater Harvesting System nestled under the subterranean parking level, designed to optimize sustainability and efficiency. #civilengineering #lunchandlearnhashtag #professionaldevelopment #structuralengineering #landdevelopment

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) publication, The Great Civil Engineering Overhaul, serves as a wake-up call to the civil engineering profession regarding the urgent need to adapt to climate change. While primarily aimed at civil engineers, the book’s core message and recommendations are equally relevant to the field of architecture. This is particularly true in Canada, where The Royal Architectural Institute Of Canada | L'Institut royal d'architecture du Canada (RAIC) and the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA), among other organizations, have been actively promoting sustainability and climate resilience in the built environment. The insights from The Great Civil Engineering Overhaul provide a valuable roadmap for Canadian architects as they navigate the challenges of climate change. By embracing sustainability, prioritizing resilience, and collaborating with clients and other professionals, architects can create a built environment prepared for an uncertain future.
