Happy Interns Day! I spoke with one of my clients about the interns she has working with her this summer and she told me about a question she asked each of them recently. She asked each of them what they hadn't worked on yet but wanted to before the end of the summer. I think this is such an important thing to find out. Remember, you have the ability to help a young person determine their future path right now. Talk to your interns. Ask questions. Find out what they love and don't love. I gave the intern working on my project very clear deliverables to own. While there are structured programs/projects for summer interns joining from B-schools. In the majority of cases, they are treated as additional support to consultants/managers to perform ad-hoc work. They are expected to deliver random analyses, Excel sheets, and PowerPoint presentations throughout their 8-week internship. But honestly, I feel it is an injustice to the intern, hindering him/her from the opportunity to learn. In the current project, I ensured that the intern was: 1.) Given very clear end-to-end deliverables to own. 2.) Provided with the complete context of the overall project. 3.) Given visibility into how the deliverables added value to the success of the overall project. This enabled the intern to: 1.) Ask relevant questions by understanding the complete context of the project. 2.) Have a sense of strong ownership and belonging to the core project team. Most importantly, it allowed the intern to evaluate both the work and the organization. Enabling them to make an informed decision about whether this is the place where they would like to build their career. If the organization gets a chance to evaluate the intern, the intern should also be given a fair opportunity to evaluate the organization. Do you agree?
