💜 Emergency Appeal - PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide 💜 For the first time in our 28-year history, PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is launching an emergency appeal to keep HOPELINE247 running through the night. Without urgent support, we may be forced to make the devastating decision to cut back our services. Every three minutes, a distressed young person contacts HOPELINE247, our suicide prevention helpline. These calls, texts, and messages come during their darkest hours—often in the middle of the night, when other services aren’t available to them. Since extending HOPELINE247 to a 24/7 service last year, demand has surged. In 2024 alone, we had 12,000 life-saving interactions during the night and saw a 66% increase in the number of young people seeking help through our webchat service. These numbers tell us how vital our work is, but rising costs and a sharp decline in donations across the charity sector have brought us to a critical moment. Most of the time, there are warning signs. We might not want to admit it, but most of the time, they are there. Most of the time, it is a scary situation, how a person will react if you ask them about it, what will you do if they admit to being in a bad place. Other times we just don't want to get involved, we have to much on our own plate. But my lesson, that I share with you today is: If you care about them, be courageous enough to ask, be willing to listen, and learn about the resources available to both of you. You might have seen me post about the 8-month program Saamiya and I are launching in late August to help BIPOC heal from racial trauma and find their voice. Until Thursday, we are donating all of our class proceeds to families escaping G@z@. Our goal is to raise $4,500 but we would love to raise more. So far, one person has committed. What will you get for your donation? You can either pay for your own spot in the program or pay it forward for someone else who needs financial support. We will then donate 100% of your funds to families escaping G*aza, picking from campaigns highlighted in Operation Olive Branch. (If you are the donor, we will send you the receipts). Why donate?
