September is National Suicide Prevention Month. (Of course, daily prevention is key.) This topic: uncomfortable and complex topic. One that I've experienced personally (twice). There is no perfect intervention or prevention solution, but it's possible. If you or a loved one is experiencing suicidal ideations, don’t give up on seeking support. In 1 week, I'll be speaking at the La Crosse Suicide Prevention Summit to boost: 1. Awareness 2. Advocacy 3. In honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, we wanted to share some key insights to help understand the impact of suicide across the country. In 2023, according to SAMHSA: ▪ 13.1 million adults had serious thoughts of suicide. ▪ 2.4 million made a plan but did not attempt. ▪ 1.1 million had serious thoughts of suicide, made a plan, and attempted suicide Suicidal thoughts don’t always lead to attempts or death, but they do represent immense suffering - early intervention is critical. This month let's do more than raise awareness—let's take action. Equip yourself with the knowledge to intervene. September is here again, and for me, that means one thing; MATTERS THAT MATTER. This month marks World Suicide Prevention Month, and although difficult, the conversation around suicide should never fade into silence. At Asido Campus Network, University of Ibadan we’ve made it our mission to keep that conversation going. MATTERS THAT MATTER is our annual event where art meets advocacy. It’s not just about raising awareness; it’s about creating a space where real conversations happen, where we move beyond whispers to boldly address suicide prevention. This event brings people together in an artistic, heartfelt way to address suicide prevention through stories, emotions, and art. One Suicide is one too many. On September 10th, Suicide Prevention Day serves as a powerful reminder to raise awareness about #suicide. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics emphasise the urgent need for greater awareness and action. World Suicide Prevention Day on 10th September 2024 is an annual reminder that there is an alternative to suicide. It aims to inspire confidence and light in all of us and that our actions, no matter how big or small, may provide hope to those who are struggling. In conjunction with our candle-lighting events throughout Cumbria, we’re offering three free sessions of Suicide Awareness Bitesize Training on 10th September 2024 at 10 am, 12 noon, and 2 pm. These sessions are open to anyone living or working in Cumbria. Our one-hour online training session is aimed at anyone who wants to understand more about suicide, how to know when someone may be having thoughts of suicide, how to talk directly and comfortably about suicide, and what we can all do to offer practical support.
