TLDR: we’re trying to banish the ‘shadow Excel’ at Tenzo - Restaurant PerformanceOps You may be wondering what a Shadow Excel is exactly. I was chatting to one of our customers explaining why we believe having one platform as a reporting source of truth that can then be personalised for the end user is so important. ‘You mean you can get rid of shadow excels?’ I had never heard it put that way but it made sense. We know that Excel reports are often: 1️⃣ Prepared by one team who don’t view data in the same way as those receiving them (finance and ops for example) 2️⃣ Out of date before they even arrive 3️⃣ Are too general actually to help any individual decision-making And what happens then? ‘Shadow Excels’ start cropping up. Teams will do their own analysis to help with their decision-making. We love this kind of initiative, but there are issues with this approach: 🤷♀️ Different teams will report differently so results will vary from one spreadsheet to another 💔 There’s no unity across the business as to what goals are being worked toward; one team may be focusing on ATV while another is focusing on labour costs ❓ No one is checking that the data these shadow excels are being fed is the right data; sales data may include VAT or labour data excludes salaried employees eg ‘Shadow Excels’ create this Frankenstein-like approach to reporting, which means no one is aligned. We want to banish them. Get everyone to sing from the same hymn sheet, but personalised to the final user, so they only see the data that’s important to them and their daily decisions. So we’re all working toward a shared goal. And improving restaurant performance every week, every day, every hour.
