Founding Director at The Place Bureau * Place Futures * Urban Research * Cultural Strategy * Destination Design *
We're looking for great examples of cultural projects around the world that have used a 'meanwhile use' or festival-based approach to test out ideas and establish a cultural destination for the longer term. Do you know of... * Any art museums that have started out as festivals? * Any foundations that have emerged from a programme-driven model? * Any destinations that had a strong participatory or co-design model? They can be large or small. A couple that spring to mind as inspiration include Derby's Museum of Making, National Museums Liverpool Sunrise to Sunset festival, and Nantes as a city-wide approach to festivals that established longer term destinations... Ideas and examples welcome! Petra Marko Carl Turner Juliette Rizzi Aki Carpenter Allison Louis Walker Catherine Botibol Sam O. Quality vs Quantity, every time.
Frontier Touring absolutely dominating the landscape with a takeover for J Balvin at our newest billboard site located opposite the Queen Victoria Markets. Selected for it's proximity to the CBD and destination locations such as the QVM and Melbourne Museum, takeovers at sites such as this deliver incredible impact and reach. When it comes to outdoor, quality trumps quantity every time.

Following the recent publication of the 2023 admission figures from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, Richard Huntrods our Director of Audiences, Research, and Insights shares his thoughts: “It was great to see audiences return to some of my favourite organisations in the 2023 figures published by ALVA last week – attendances jumping up by almost 20% on 2022. This is no doubt due to the huge post-pandemic upswing in international visits last year (up by over 6 million on 2022) and the innovative programming and marketing efforts. Whilst the growth is great news, figures remaining significantly behind 2019 attendances and reflect similar trends seen in the number coming from DCMS sponsored museums and galleries – still down 27% on 2018/19. Interestingly, these figures contrast markedly with the performing arts, where factors including the desire for a sense of community and shared immersive experiences are helping West End and live experiences of all kinds hit record numbers across the UK.”
