Glad to see a data-driven and forward-looking perspective on a hard issue in Crain's Chicago Business from Robert Boik: the future of emergency response to gun violence if the ShotSpotter contract lapses in Chicago.   I was an author on the OIG report frequently cited to support the most critical perspectives, and I stand behind 100% of the analysis in that report. But its analysis was more modest than it is often made out to be. It explicitly left open the cost-benefit questions and analysis of alternatives that are essential to making an informed judgment about this technology’s value.   I wish that more, much more, of that necessary follow-up analysis had made its way into the public discourse before today. It would not have settled the issue—data alone never does. But there was a missed opportunity here to build trust, understanding, and institutional intelligence with regard to future policing technology investments.
