Fast burst reactors were the first fast-spectrum research reactors to reach criticality by using only prompt neutrons with high-enriched uranium as fuel, creating a pulse for microseconds. Among many achievements, fast burst reactors were the first research reactors to demonstrate the ability of thermal expansion to terminate a pulse and to show how this could aid in reactor safety. In addition, fast burst reactors were pivotal in early fission studies including critical mass determination, criticality safety, the study of prompt and delayed neutrons, and much more. #fastreactor #researchreactor #fastspectrum #promptneutrons #delayedneutrons #burst

Glad to share our recent publication "Prognostic Model and Failure Mechanisms of Steam Generators in Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactors"! In this paper, we reviewed and ranked possible degradation modes of steam generators in sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFR) and proposed a prognostic model that estimates the corresponding failure probabilities. #NuclearSafety #SodiumCooledFastReactor #AdvancedReactor #Prognostics #Diagnostics Big thanks to my co-authors Dr. Xingang Zhao, Dr. Junyung KIM, Dr. Birdy Phathanapirom, Kyle Warns, Prof. Hyun Gook Kang and Prof. Michael Golay.

Best invest in Building Fusion power, space, and maritime propulsion systems and industry, You talk about Nuclear (meaning Fission) and fail to discuss fusion. https://lnkd.in/ge_aeX7M The nuclear fission industry is, ignorant of what's happening around you. Pull your uranium heads out, start adjusting your industry to fusion energy and start preparing to enter the commercially growing fusion energy industry. As it dawns on Earth like the sun. By 2028, Helion is expected to start producing electricity from its first fusion commercial power plant, which will provide electricity to Microsoft. Many of the failures that occur in nuclear fuel rods in light water reactors (LWRs) around the world are caused by the phenomenon of mechanical interaction between pellets and cladding (PCMI). Whether due to cladding crack induction or stress corrosion cracking (SCC), this mechanism continues to be of interest to fuel rod manufacturers, fuel engineers, analysts and fuel performance code developers. Given the multiple mechanisms involved in PCMI, the process is extremely complex to simulate; therefore the models involved must be continuously improved and subjected to validation with experiments and comparison to other similar codes. PCMI is also a consideration for the design and licensing of accident-tolerant fuels (ATF). #nuclearfuel #PCMI #pellet #clad #interaction #modeling #simulation #powerramp
Just published: Delighted to share the new #NEA reports on the benchmark study on pellet-cladding mechanical interaction (PCMI) in light water reactor fuel (volume 1 and 2), prepared by the expert group on reactor fuel performance - #EGRFP (https://lnkd.in/g4dhxHZQ). The objective is to improve the understanding and modelling of PCMI among NEA member countries. As the current Chair of the EGRFP, I'm grateful to all participants, data provider and NEA staff for all their efforts during the last decade to make this possible!

"If there is one word to characterize the advanced reactors in various stages of the journey to market, it is diversity. They differ not only in design but also in business approach. At this juncture, the end of 2023, it is hard to say how many will make it across what high-tech companies in other fields call the “valley of death,” the space between designing a new product and producing copies in commercial quantities". #advancedreactors #smr #business
A very well written, and realistic, summary of advanced reactors by Matthew L. Wald. Article includes a nice description of each reactor and an acknowledgement that "Much of the progress in advanced reactors so far has been the publication of pictures of people in business suits shaking hands in front of a camera". Let's hope for real progress in 2024! https://lnkd.in/e7rK5Bcr

Join us in congratulating Cassie Rutherford, associate professor in CCEE, for the 2024 Hogentogler Award from ASTM International. The award is given annually to the authors of an ASTM paper of outstanding merit on soil or rock. The paper "A Multidirectional Cyclic Direct Simple Shear Device for Characterizing Dynamic Soil Behavior" presents a novel multidirectional cyclic direct, simple shear (MD-DSS) test that applies cyclic shear loads in multiple directions simultaneously. This new approach allows for a more detailed and realistic analysis of soil behavior under complex loading conditions, providing insights into how soils react during earthquakes. Co-authors on the paper include University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professors Scott Olson and Youssef Hashash, as well as former students Lopamudra Bhaumik of Jacobs Engineering Group, Ozgun Numanoglu of Schnabel Engineering, and Alfonso A. Cerna-Diaz of AECOM. Dr. Thomas Weaver of the Office of Research, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is also a co-author. A great team of authors making waves in soil research; congratulations, Dr. Rutherford!
