I recently came across this Roger Penske interview; it was noted that around 90% of promotions and moves occur within the company. This insight showed how his flat organization grows from within by giving employees opportunities. The company's management is encouraged to be grounded and understand the workings of each division. As the organization is flat, they need to be able to handle all aspects of the company. Because of this, the company's success is due to the cross-pollination of different areas of the organization. This cross-pollination brings diverse experiences and allows individuals to understand how all divisions are interconnected within the company. Key takeaways: 1. Penske stated, "If you are not in an environment where you might fail, you really don't have a job." Although there is room to learn, he maintains a standard of excellence. 2. Kalmar Group just closed its seventh search in 20 weeks (and hopefully #8 by Friday). Those numbers are not that good for an established recruiting firm, but keep in mind we launched from scratch in January. Hoping this time next year, it will be 20 searches in 20 weeks. A few learnings from the first five months of a boot-strapped recruiting firm. 1. Partnerships. Working with great leaders who run great companies is everything. 2. The people business is unpredictable. Assume the best and zoom out whenever something doesn't go "as planned"... what ever does by the way (?) 3. Find people who are where you want to be. What Nik F. and Harris Fanaroff have built is inspiring. They are not in recruiting, but I'm trying to follow their playbook in a lot of ways. 4. Long-term mindset is everything. Just keep moving.
