A Summer in Review: COO of a Family-Owned Business! This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to serve as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Blue Wave Holdings. With a foundation in Industrial Engineering from Cal Poly, I applied principles of financial organization and process improvement to real-world challenges, overseeing daily operations, launching new products, and optimizing efficiency. Key Achievements: - Oversaw the fulfillment of over 15,000 orders across 5 SKUs, generating over $100,000 in revenue for the company, demonstrating proficiency in managing e-commerce operations and driving sales growth. - Boosted efficiency by 24% through strategic process optimization and data-driven decision-making. - Utilized TikTok Shop and Amazon Seller Central to process and fulfill orders efficiently, gaining crucial operational skills - Managed a small-scale distribution center, sharpening my skills in inventory management and financial analysis. - Expanded the product line, ensuring excellent customer service and enhancing customer satisfaction. - Gained technical experience using tools like Excel for data analysis and LegalZoom for trademark filings. A crucial part of this experience was working closely with my brother, the CEO. The success of our operations relied heavily on strong communication and collaboration, reinforcing my interpersonal skills. This role has not only deepened my understanding of business operations but also strengthened my leadership and interpersonal skills. At last nights the Product Group London April event, we discussed and shared insights on Product Metrics and Chris Compston shared his perspectives on Product Operations. On Product Metrics we discussed the differences between business and product metrics (some lively and friendly disagreements here), the things to think about when setting product metrics (including business objectives, customers, impact, trackability, simplicity, etc.) and that product metrics have changed in the current environment – a great quote was that we’ve moved “from growth at all costs to the path to revenue”. This was all before Chris Compston took to the chair and provided insights from his hands on experience doing Product Operations. Chris described the differences between the roles. For example how product operations is an “enabler that frees up product people’s time, so they can make better product decisions”. He also talked about how product operations delivers value through focusing on the operational aspects that then gives product people more time to think about and drive their products forward. I recently read the book “Inspired” by Marty Cagan. It was recommended to me by a product manager at Walmart with a team of over 30 people. He said it’s one of his favorite books. As I’m trying to sharpen up my skills, a few things stood out to me. I really liked its breakdown of the different types of risk associated with products: - Value - Will the user buy this? - Usability - Can the user figure out how to use this? - Technical Feasibility - Can our engineers deliver? - Business Viability - Can our stakeholders support this? Incorporating some of these definitions can help with processing good ideas through a more structured thinking approach. I’m used to going with my gut feeling on a lot of decisions, but I’m finding that having a more check-list approach has helped me be more open-minded and less biased when judging what’s best in new situations.
