Hi Everyone, Mark Maxfield here, CEO of The Cottages Assisted Living & Memory Care. Today, I want to talk about trust—specifically, whether the people who work for you trust you as a leader. Let me share a quick example. A few weeks ago, I had a meeting with our leadership team. As our business continues to grow, we’re finding it necessary to restructure certain things, including our compensation plans. Anytime you make changes that directly affect people’s paychecks, it’s natural for anxiety and questions to arise. During that meeting, I was able to speak openly with the team. While there were some concerns and doubts, they trust me as a leader. They’re willing to wait and see how everything unfolds, believing that I’ll do what’s in their best interest. They trust that in the end, the compensation plans will not only be fair but even better than before. This brings me to a critical question: Have you earned the trust of your team? I reflected on what I’ve done over time to build that trust—attending staff and resident events, recognizing individual contributions, and consistently showing up for my people. Building trust isn’t optional; it’s essential. There will be times when you need your team’s support during hard decisions or periods of change. This month, I encourage you to think about the ways you’re developing trust with your people. Because when challenges arise, even if they’re for the greater good, you’ll need that foundation of trust to keep your team aligned and motivated. Remember, you can’t grow the business alone—it takes the entire team. Building trust is a continuous effort, and the rewards are immeasurable when everyone feels confident in your leadership. Until next time, keep working on trust and building stronger connections with your team. #cottagespride #leadershipthoughts #assistedliving #seniorliving #memorycare #longtermcare #greatworkplace

6 months ago, Sarah wasn’t sure she should take the leap into a new role as a Registered Manager in children’s residential care. She hesitated, held back by familiar feelings of imposter syndrome, wondering if she was ready to lead a team and make an impact at that level. Today, Sarah isn’t just thriving—she’s excelling. Her commitment to creating a safe, supportive environment for vulnerable children has not only changed their lives but also transformed her own. She’s gone from a £42,000 salary to £60,000, but even more valuable is the impact she’s making and the praise she’s earned. Her employer recently said, “Sarah is the best Registered Manager I’ve ever hired.” Sarah's story is a reminder: sometimes the biggest rewards come when we push past our own doubts. 🚀 Whether you're starting out or at a crossroads, know that success is waiting when you decide to believe in yourself. #Leadership #CareerGrowth #ResidentialCare #Inspiration #RegisteredManager #SuccessStory

If someone had told a younger me that I'd end up in sales leadership, I would have been surprised. I began my career as a doula, and I often joke with my team that we are all just doulas. Their job is to doula their providers (clients), my job is to doula them. Our collective job is to doula each other. To doula is to bear witness—to understand and anticipate, to see, to hold, to be with. Witnessing people in their most vulnerable and powerful moments (birth, life, death) shapes you in ways that are difficult to describe. You think a lot about the concept of power in healthcare and health equity work. It's where I learned that the most impactful power is often the least visible. If we’re paying attention we can see that all any of us really need is permission — to ask for what we need, to have a need, to believe those needs are valid. That is how we hand people back their power. Real change begins and ends with centering people and communities, empowering them with the resources they need to serve themselves, to thrive. Perhaps the prerequisite to leadership is living out the work in every corner of our lives, to stepping back, and amplifying those we’re tasked with building up. #leadership #mentalhealth #peoplefirst #community

Celebrating Leadership and Collaboration: Swati (she, her) Vyas MSW, MPH It is with immense respect and heartfelt appreciation that I reflect on my meeting with Swati Vyas a longstanding supporter , a beacon of effective leadership and a Senior Public Health Specialist at Hackney Council. Swati graciously took the time to engage in a meaningful discussion with Luljeta Nuzi further illuminating the path of community-centric leadership she champions. Swati's unwavering dedication to fostering deep community engagement and building robust partnerships shines brightly in her every endeavor. From her impactful work at Redbridge CVS to her current role at Hackney Council, Swati has consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to inclusivity and positive change. Her strategic and empathetic approach ensures that all voices, particularly those often marginalized, are heard and integrated into the fabric of public health strategy. 🎬 I recently rewatched a clip from Happy Gilmore where the leader of a senior living organization is shown being abusive to his residents. While it's just a movie, it highlights a serious issue that's all too real in the world of senior care. This scene serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of thoroughly vetting candidates in the senior living and healthcare sectors. Our aging population deserves the best possible care, provided by the most compassionate and dedicated servant leaders. In an industry where trust and care are paramount, it's essential that we commit to stringent hiring practices. This means not only verifying credentials and experience but also ensuring that candidates possess the empathy, integrity, and respect necessary to support and uplift our loved ones. Let's use every tool at our disposal—background checks, in-depth interviews, and reference checks—to ensure that we place only the most qualified and compassionate individuals in these crucial roles. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that our senior communities are safe, supportive, and nurturing environments for all. After we participated in the Sagamore Institute’s publication of Workforce 2040, our president and CEO Frederick Cartwright sat down with leaders from Indiana educational institutions for a conversation on the urgent need for collaboration across sectors and institutions to build the skilled workforce pipelines necessary for statewide success. Fred rounded out the discussion by emphasizing the importance of moving from “loose collaboration to thoughtful coordination” across sectors. Learn more in our blog: https://ow.ly/322L50UeOzO

Seems like we don't enjoy hearing how impossible it all is. We probably prefer a little brighter outlook. Even if it's not as easy to trust as, 'it's all going downhill..' #trust #humanity #eventprofs #keynotespeaker
