👏 Congratulations to Luisa Trindade, the new director of graduate school Experimental Plant Sciences! Trindade combines the new position with her professorship at Wageningen University & Research. What drives her to take on this new challenge? And what goals does she pursue as director? Read part of the interview below, or find the full interview here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eyMNCJRG 💚 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? "I get a lot of satisfaction from mentoring young scientists such as PhD candidates and postdocs to develop themselves. A more personal motivation is that I want to become more involved in policy and strategy. And this position allows me to do that while still being very much involved in science." 💁♀️ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫? "I'd like to see our young scientists benefit more from global expertise. I'd like them to come into contact not only with Dutch specialists, but also with those from other countries. For that I want to make more use of our strategic alliances with other Universities abroad. Secondly, I want to strengthen the bond with senior researchers. Not only to exchange knowledge, but especially to come up with good research ideas together." 🎓 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐄𝐏𝐒? "EPS provides a lot of support to young plant researchers. That's not just about the development of scientific skills, but also soft skills. I dare say that we really offer an attractive package of courses that allow students to develop further. Another really strong point of our graduate school is that we support young researchers individually when they get stuck. They may have personal issues and become a bit lost, for instance. We also help them out in instances like that." 👩🔬 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬? "True, many of them are uncertain about their future and that can lead them to choose a career outside science. With EPS we want to reduce that uncertainty and energise the academic careers of young researchers. At the same time, it remains a fact that many PhD students ultimately make a different choice than a career in science. At some point they may realise that a different route is better suited. We also want to be there for those students." #plantsciences #postdoc #phd #graduateschool

PhD Student at UVA | BSc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology | America Needs You Fellow Alum | Drew University Alum
On May 11th, I graduated with a BSc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Drew University! This achievement is a testament to the incredible support from my peers and mentors. Throughout my journey, I faced numerous challenges - from adapting to college life during the COVID-19 pandemic and navigating as a first-generation student to gaining research experience. I overcame these obstacles by asking for help. This post is a heartfelt thank you to everyone who directly or indirectly assisted me along the way. Starting college in the Fall of 2020 was tough. The pandemic made connections difficult, and I struggled with my first chemistry quiz. Reaching out to my professor for help was a turning point, transforming my study habits and boosting my confidence to seek guidance from other professors. As a first-generation college student, my family couldn't fully understand my academic struggles. Joining the America Needs You (ANY) program was a game-changer. Mentors like Eric Brown, Jr. 💡, Diana Klaser Cheng, and Michael Klaser provided invaluable support, while individuals such as Alejandra Carbajal, Cathy V., and Imani Reed, M.Ed., MBA provided me with opportunities such as the trip to Merck in 2022. In my sophomore year, I felt inexperienced in labs due to online classes, but my professors' support sparked my research interest. Thanks to Dr. Adam Cassano, I participated in summer research, which led me to the University of Virginia’s Student Research Internship Program in 2023. This experience deepened my passion for research. Now, I’m excited to announce that I’ll be attending the University of Virginia’s graduate program in Chemical Biology! Thank you to everyone who contributed to my journey. I couldn't have done it without you. Here’s to the future and the incredible possibilities ahead! 🌟 #Graduation #Biochemistry #MolecularBiology #FirstGeneration #Mentorship #Community #DrewUniversity #Research #UVA

This mini coaching is designed for PhD applicants to increase success through thoughtful high‐quality applications. "Success occurs when opportunity meets preparation" #research #skill #PhD #doctorate #career #development #membrane #water #scholarship #funding
It is the season for PhD applications... Like probably very many colleagues I receive several PhD applications per day at the moment and as the start of an IAMT series of research skill coaching I have written a page on how to apply for a PhD. Hope this is helpful, reduces the number of random applications and increases success for those genuinely searching for the right place, the right topic, the right team, thus are setting a really important direction for their careers. There is a shortage of really good applicants and I would encourage those willing to put the effort that success is highly likely! A PhD is not for the faint-hearted though and to achieve research independence is an arduous road across obstacles that actually teach both technical skill as well as some good dose of 'philosophy' whatever this may mean*! https://lnkd.in/epiAn-8N #research #skills, #PhD, #doctorate, #career #development, #membrane #technology, #water #research, #scholarship #funding * not throwing in, indefinite capacity for suffering, unsatisfiable curiosity, endurance, resilience (most who have been there know what I mean) 😏

Hi everyone, I’ve been a bit inactive here due to academic pressure, but every time I log in, I see people celebrating their acceptances into dream universities. It always gets me reflecting on the process, especially as I navigate my own path. A bit of background: I’m currently pursuing a Master’s in Chemistry, with my coursework wrapping up in January 2025. While the degree offers a broad range of research domains, the challenge lies in finding the right direction. Should I build on my bachelor's research, or explore a new field? How do I align my strengths with the best research path? These are some of the questions constantly on my mind. For instance, in my bachelor’s, I focused on inorganic chemistry. Now, I’m wondering—should I continue down that path, or explore something new like electrochemistry, which I’ve found particularly interesting? As I think about my future in research, here are a few questions I’m grappling with: 1. When is the right time to apply for a PhD? 2. How much work and brainstorming is required for a solid application? 3. What’s the typical timeline for the application process? 4. Should I pursue a PhD immediately after my master’s, or explore opportunities in the job market first? Given that my coursework will be completed by early 2025, I would appreciate any insights or advice on navigating the PhD application process or transitioning into industry. I look forward to learning from those with experience! #LinkedIn #AcademicJourney #PhD #PhDApplications #Research #chemistry #Electrochemistry #MastersInChemistry
