As someone who has always been captivated by the intersection of history and innovation, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona holds a special place in my heart. This awe-inspiring basilica, designed by the legendary Antoni Gaudí, is not only a masterpiece of architectural brilliance but also a testament to the marvels of modern technology. Construction began in 1882 and was not even a quarter completed with Gaudi died in 1926. In fact, the mid-way point wasn’t reached until 2010, and is scheduled to be completed in 2026. It has been almost 20 years since I last saw it in person and wow has it come a long way! 𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚: • When completed, it will have taken 10 times longer than the Great Pyramids, 123 years more than the Taj Mahal, and 50 years more than the Great Wall of China to be constructed. • Only two people are buried there – its architect, Antoni Gaudi, and the man who started it all, Bocobella. • The building is paid for solely on private donations and tourism. • When completed it will be the tallest religious building in Europe at over 550 feet tall. • Around 8,000 pipes will be installed around the church comprising several organs that will all be able to be controlled simultaneously. 🌲 The National Trust: Beyond the Country Houses 🌲 Christmas and New Year can be overwhelmingly social, even for someone like me who loves to be around people. So, Boxing Day with a jigsaw was the perfect way for us to unwind. I first became aware of the National Trust back in 1995 during its centenary celebrations. While I’d spent many happy hours exploring places like Fishpool Valley at Croft Castle and visiting the eerie Calke Abbey just after it opened, it wasn’t until I began working for the Trust in 1996 that I truly began to appreciate the scale of its mission. A particular highlight for me was the stunning Capriccio by Carl Laubin, a painting that brings together 72 of the Trust’s buildings in one grand scene. I’m proud to say I can recognise nearly every building in it. 🥇 ⚠️ However, there are two significant challenges I see the Trust facing today: 🏛️ The Narrow View of Country Houses: The Trust is often identified solely with its country houses. While these buildings are iconic, the Trust also manages diverse landscapes—from coastal regions to mountains, and it plays an important role in the industrial heritage of the UK. 💷 The Wealth Perception: People assume that because the Trust manages such a vast collection of historic estates, it must be incredibly wealthy. The reality is that these properties require significant upkeep, and the Trust needs ongoing financial support to maintain them for future generations. 🧩 If we continue with the jigsaw analogy, we need to understand that the country houses are just one piece of a much larger puzzle. From outdoor activities like hiking and cycling on Trust estates to educational programs and temporary exhibitions, there’s a wealth of experiences to be had that showcase the Trust’s true breadth. The National Trust is far more than just its country houses. Its commitment to preserving the environment, engaging with communities, and making history accessible to everyone is what truly sets it apart. I think it's important to ensure that the full picture of the Trust’s work is recognised and celebrated, now and in the future.

Come celebrate the V European Day of Historic Gardens with us on April 26th! We invite you to take an interesting walk around Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów, on April 26th (4:30 - 6 p.m): HISTORIC GARDENS AT THE THRESHOLD OF THE NEW CENTURIES: SANCTUARIES OF TRADITION OR EXPERIMENTAL FIELDS OF EXPLORATION? The beauty of historic gardens is the result of generations of work, united in their concern for the uniqueness of a place. However, an essential condition for the survival of even the most beautiful corners is their usefulness. Adapting to the needs of modern users forces a renegotiation of tradition. Should we choose historical plant species or those whose bloom lasts longer to please the eyes of walkers? Is it always the oldest that is most valuable? Should there be sporting opportunities in every park? We will look for answers to these challenging questions together on a walk through Wilanów's historic gardens. Please, read the complete Activities Program of the V EDHG here: https://lnkd.in/d6fsCUDn _ European Institute of Cultural Routes, Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe Programme | Council of Europe _ #edhg #europeandayofhistoricgardens #aEuropeofUnitedGardens #culturalroutes #councilofeurope

The morning of Day One and we’ve already learned so much - especially from Aunty Norma Ingram as our Welcomer to Country - specifically to the land of the Bidigal people of the Eora Nation. Aunty Norma reminded us that for Aboriginal people - just as for PIANC people, water is of crucial cultural importance as is connection! They have cared for this country for 65,000 years - successfully! Yama is the word she gave us to use today - as a greeting, an acknowledgement of another’s deep presence, and an enquiry into their wellbeing. So Yama to all attendees at our booked out PIANC Sydney Conference today and our colleagues back in the office or on site! #PIANC #WATERBORNETRANSPORTINFRASTRUCTURE #alwayswasalwayswillbe

We need to make the balance between valorization in front of profitability" 📍 The risk is that the local community is expelled out of the own heritage context and step by step replaced by another community under the expression of investors interested in profitability. We would like to quote the phrase here: “Venice is a branded heritage site more than a branded heritage city”... Do you know of specific cases in your cities where heritage sites are being exploited for private profit? #arti4heritage #culturalheritage #artichannel
