Smart mobility hubs, car-free neighborhoods, zero-emission zones and one day maybe even self-driving cars. The city is full of opportunities to improve accessibility, livability and safety. The matter is urgent, as cities in Europe are becoming increasingly crowded with more residents, more visitors and more logistics. We are stuck in traffic jams, we emit a lot of CO2, we make accidents and parking is difficult. In our cities there is an ongoing battle for scarce space: do we prioritize green streets or parking spaces in front of our homes? Delft urban mobility scientists are developing much-needed knowledge and solutions to make our busy cities smart, clean and safe for everyone. Read our story of team science (with Niels van Oort, Achilleas Psyllidis, Deborah Nas): https://lnkd.in/eE9bhxpM Also available in Dutch: https://lnkd.in/eaCQ_XKk #MobilityWeek, #TUDelft

🌐 🏘 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 #𝙐𝙧𝙗𝙖𝙣 #𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜: 𝘿𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙏𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙨 Here you have the abstract i have made from an insightful and recent article written by @Josep Catà from Diario EL PAÍS. 🎮 He draws a fascinating comparison between the game The Sims and #urban #planning, highlighting how decisions in the game impact its characters in ways similar to how urban planners' decisions affect society. 🏙️ Patricio Reyes and Fernando Cucchietti from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center are creating a digital twin of cities using the Mare Nostrum 5 supercomputer. This digital twin will simulate public policies before they are implemented in real life, providing valuable insights. 📊 Supercomputing power: Increased computing capacity allows for complex questions like how #housing is affected by public #transport or green corridors. Funded with four million euros, BSC's projects include expanding #bike lanes and achieving the 15-minute city concept. 🔍 #Data & ethics: Building a digital twin requires vast data, raising ethical concerns. Data from #climate, pollution, #water consumption, security cameras, and geolocation are used anonymously to improve the city. Transparency and traceability are crucial. 👥 Empowering #citizens: Digital models can empirically evaluate public policies. Ramon Gras Alomà from Harvard University believes this will transform decision-making, using mathematical patterns from different cities to identify best practices and avoid poor decisions. 👉 Here you have the source (requires subscription): https://lnkd.in/d_-Q3Kg6 ✅ Further readings: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dtiXGCus 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dfGwj4YQ. 🔗https://lnkd.in/dEZWgkxj

🌍 Reflections from Climathon Lund 2024 🌿 What a whirlwind! The beginning of the week, I was part of a team of 7 tackling the challenge: “𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦-𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵-𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴?” With just 1.5 days to brainstorm, our focus was on the old, abandoned harbour, Nyhamnen in Malmö. It was a blast rethinking urban spaces with nature as the cornerstone. A big shoutout to Mejeriet for hosting us in such a fantastic space (and the food was a treat 😋)! And special thanks to Ludwig Bengtsson Sonesson for answering our questions about the area — having the opportunity to ask unfiltered questions from someone directly involved in the development was invaluable. ✨ For me, this challenge was a refreshing dive back into city planning from a nature-first perspective, something I haven't focused on since my studies at Chalmers, where my primary interest was social sustainability in the built environment. Our approach was simple yet powerful: instead of adding more plans to the table, we asked, “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥?” By pinpointing that first critical step, we believe we found a solid starting point for real progress. No, we didn’t make it to the finals — but hey, it’s all about the journey, right? 💡 And I definitely learned a lot about maintaining a positive mindset, thanks to our coach Finnur Sverrisson. Huge thanks to Jens Almqvist for being an incredible host, making this event seamless and engaging. Here’s to embracing challenges, asking the right questions, and always keeping nature at the forefront of our solutions! 🌱✨ #ClimathonLund #NatureBasedSolutions #SustainableCities #UrbanPlanning

What would you envision for the role of technology in 2050? Unconstrained by concerns about immediate feasibility, our RSE Peter Kalverla envisioned how climate-responsive urban planning could be democratized with the help of #DestinationEarth. Moreover, Peter has recently received the DestinE Platform Innovation BlueSky Concept Prize for his "visionary" proposal for the future! Congratulations, Peter!
