THIS. Nearly 80% of parent employees' PTO days are spent on childcare related issues (Dr's visits, sick days, nanny calls off etc) but if companies recognized this and provided a separate "bank" of days, or offered employees to use their sick days to take care of their loved ones, employees could use their PTO for ACTUAL vacations, decreasing burnout and increasing satisfaction, retention, and productivity in the process. #childcare #lifeworkfit

Dear Managers: A reminder to extend some extra compassion to working parents who are exhausted after a very germy season with their little ones. In my household, just since January we’ve had Covid (twice!), Influenza A, strep, pneumonia, and other unknown viruses. 😷🤧🤒 Your working parents are worn down (and many are about to enter the childcare chaos of summer time, where those who are lucky enough to find daycamp spots will have to navigate new pick-up and drop-off commutes, shorter hours of child care coverage, and kids’ big emotions that accompany any transitions!). Managers and HR leaders – Here are some no-cost things that you can implement right now to support working parents: ⭐️Clarify in your employee handbook (and in your manager training) that sick days can also be taken to care for a sick child or dependent family member (such as an aging parent). ⭐️Update your attendance policy to classify absences due to child care disruptions as “excused absences.” Many employers think that they have an absenteeism problem, when in reality their company is paying the price for our larger economy-wide problems around child care. ⭐️Add this open-ended question to the end of each 1x1 check in with employees: “Do you have any other feedback for me about how I can better support you?” This is helpful for all employees, but especially for those with parenting and caregiving responsibilities. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” way to support working parents, and asking open-ended questions will help you figure out what your employees need. We need our leaders in Washington to pass national paid family leave and invest in affordable child care.

About 70% of U.S. workers are #caregivers, either for children, elderly parents, spouses or partners, and other family members. We must address caregiver burnout or face dire ramifications, says work-life balance expert Ellen Ernst Kossek.
