Mental health concerns are the cause for many missed school days—and the rise in chronic absenteeism has also been linked to mental health and wellbeing issues. Many states have taken the step of offering mental health days to their students. Advocates say this is a step in the right direction. Would your school district benefit from implementing this policy? https://buff.ly/4a9lyBi #mentalhealthdays #MHAM #MentalHealthMatters

Critical concerns over school mental health policies, “putting student lives at risk”!!!! Worth a read and a thought below. Thank you The Educator for shining a light on this issue. As organisations in Australia start to take action toward their legislative requirement on Positive Duty and the proactive prevention of sexual harassment, we need to look at schools & ask what they are doing in such proactive prevention for our children. Not because they must, but because they should. Wrapped up in this complex web of child safety & mental health are the psychosocial hazards, also a hot topic in organisations nationally to better protect workforces. Again I ask where is the requirement on the management of psychosocial hazards for children in schools, as organisations with a duty of care for all in their capacity of responsibility. So let’s bring in human rights and the application of human rights legislation for all children in every school, because currently, as you may know, private & independent schools are exempt. So when we’re talking about mental health, safety, positive duty, psychosocial hazards and human rights for children in schools, shouldn’t we be expecting the best possible care for every child in EVERY school. Public school funding is a hot topic, as it should be, there isn’t enough, and this creates a variety of issues including but not limited to the perpetuation of prejudice & classism across the system. So while some schools are bound to incorporate respectful relationships into their curriculum, yet some sustain sexism & racism while boasting ‘traditional’ values; Houston, we have a problem. When we look at downstream outcomes like youth mental health, male suicide, gender-based violence, coercive control, and the gender pay gap, shouldn’t we be doing absolutely everything we can to address root causes with a #stopitatthestart mindset? Isn’t prevention better than managing the consequences? 5moThis is a slippery slope. It's absolutely important to view mental health as equally important to physiological health, but too much allowance of school avoidance can exacerbate behavioral and mental health challenges. I would love to hear others' perspectives about the right balance!
