Last week, I was interviewing a candidate for an Associate Product Manager role on behalf of a client. At the end, the candidate asked me a very thought provoking question - As a Product Manager without deep technical expertise, how do you ensure engineering teams don't take you for a ride. My 3 cents: 1. Have the #Humility to acknowledge that you don't know as much about technology as the technology team. 2. Let your #Curiosity loose and develop the ability to ask the right questions. You're not a cat, so curiosity cant kill you 😉 3. In discussions with engineering teams, while you may not have as much knowledge about technology, build credibility by knowing more about the business and the end user. Share that information in a way that engineering teams can understand and appreciate it. This allows them to #Respect you. Would love to know what has worked for you. #ProductManagement #Humility #Curiosity #Respect

Why do some companies pay so much more for product managers than others? Two reasons why companies will pay top of market: * They truly value getting awesome product managers * They can pay because of funding or generating enough profits Why they won't: * They don't value or understand the value of product managers * They are hiring more program or project managers and disguising the jobs as product managers to attract more talent * They have thin profit margins or funding P.S. Giving equity counts as paying

Hiring more Product Managers is many times the WRONG thing to do. 🛑😲 You’re often much better off teaching Product concepts to engineers and the rest of the team. Not every team needs a dedicated Product manager and many can often move much faster without one. Besides there are very few people in the market with the skills needed to do Product Management right. A good friend of mine estimates that 20% of PMs have the required blend of technical, marketing, and general business skills needed to do the job properly. #productmanagement #productengineering #productdevelopment
