It was a great time trimming out the datacom rack live at the Vertical Cable booth during ISC West! Times like last week at ISC are outstanding reminders of how much more powerful and productive we are as an industry when we work together instead of against each other. Did I have to spend my time at ISC building out a rack and showing other integrators how they can do better? No - I could have walked the show floor as usual and seen a lot of cool stuff. Did I want to share knowledge and skills with other integrators? Heck yeah! Gate keeping “trade secrets” is ultimately nonproductive. Sharing knowledge and skills benefits everybody and moves the industry forward so that we all win! In true #communityovercompetition fashion, having the opportunity to meet so many fellow systems integrators and industry peers and share some tips and tricks on how they can take their installs to the next level is always a great experience. From quickly terminating keystone jacks, to labeling, to methods of perfectly dressing out patch panels, there was a LOT of productive conversation last week. For me, seeing people leave the booth with new knowledge that will change their game in a positive way is a win for the industry! Huge shoutout to VC for being such an integral partner in our day-to-day as a systems integrator and the industry as a whole. As we launch this year’s reverse Pitch Competition, let’s once again celebrate last year’s first-place winners, Somersfield Academy!   The competition offered the three following challenges: 1.          How can we make it easier for the everyday traveler on Bermuda’s roads to know which bus route to take and when? 2.          How can we implement a system that allows fans to turn on and off depending on a room’s temperature to keep the indoor space cool? 3.          How can everyday people mine cryptocurrencies without an expensive, energy-inefficient setup?   Somersfield Academy embraced the second challenge with an innovative concept—a bladeless fan that could prevent children and pets from accidents due to fast-spinning blades. In a detailed PowerPoint presentation, they also demonstrated how their automated fan complies with the 4 P’s of business: Product, Price, Promotion, and Place.   As a result of their innovative idea, Somersfield took home the first prize!
