🌟 A Fresh Perspective on Accessibility Today, I saw the redesigned wheelchair symbol for the first time, and I must say, I love it! This new icon, depicting someone in motion, has really made me think about its deeper impact. 🔄 Why It’s Impactful: - Empowerment: It focuses on capabilities, not limitations, by highlighting movement. - Changing Perceptions: It encourages us to see beyond traditional views and appreciate what individuals can achieve. - Inclusivity: It represents a step towards a more inclusive society. Small gestures like updating a symbol can play a big part in making our society more welcoming. I’m all for embracing and promoting these changes! Let's support this positive shift together. 🌍 #Accessibility #Inclusion #Empowerment

Placemaking is inherently about people and their experiences. To ensure a truly inclusive and equitable process, identifying and engaging a diverse range of stakeholders is crucial. While "stakeholder" is widely used, it can be perceived as impersonal or overly focused on interests rather than relationships. Some alternatives include: * Community members: Emphasizes the collective aspect and shared ownership * Partners: Highlights collaboration and shared goals * Constituents: Suggests representation and accountability * Affected parties: Clearly indicates those impacted by the project The best term depends on the specific context and the desired emphasis. For example, in placemaking, "community members" might be more appropriate as it emphasizes the collective nature of the project. Traditional Stakeholders (these are often easy to identify and include): * Government officials * Business owners * Residents * Property owners * Local organizations (schools, churches, etc.) Hidden Stakeholders (these groups might be overlooked): * Low-income residents * People with disabilities * Elderly residents * Youth * Indigenous communities * LGBTQ+ communities * Recent immigrants * People experiencing homelessness Ultimately, the goal is to choose a term that resonates with the people involved and accurately reflects their relationships. As we strive to create places for all we must also ensure that the placemaking process itself truly reflects the needs and aspirations of the entire community. Here are some ideas/thoughts on strategies for Diverse Stakeholder Engagement Focus Groups: Conduct focused group discussions with different segments of the community to understand their needs, aspirations, and concerns. Surveys and Questionnaires: Distribute surveys to gather feedback from a wide range of people and ensure the surveys are accessible to people with different literacy levels and languages. Pop-up Engagement: Set up pop-up events in various locations to reach people where they are. Partnerships: Collaborate with community organizations that serve marginalized groups to reach their members. Language and Cultural Sensitivity: Ensure all communication materials are accessible in multiple languages and culturally appropriate. Accessibility: Make sure all engagement activities are physically accessible to people with disabilities. Power Dynamics: Be aware of power imbalances and work to create a level playing field for all participants. Inclusive Language: Use inclusive language that avoids stereotypes and generalizations. Ensuring diversity, equality, and representation is important so assemble a project team that reflects the diversity of the community! #placemaking #urbanism #urbandesign #launceston #planning

🌟 Embracing Diversity: A Call for Inclusion 🌟 Let's talk about something that truly matters. It's not about the challenges someone faces due to a disability—it's about how society often falls short in offering the support and inclusion that every individual, regardless of ability, deserves. The real tragedy isn't the disability itself; it's the barriers and biases that hinder the path to equality and understanding. Every person, irrespective of their abilities, deserves equal opportunities, respect, and a chance to thrive in a society that celebrates diversity. Imagine a world where inclusivity isn't an exception but a norm—a world where differences are cherished and accommodated. It's not an impossible dream; it's a vision we can actively work towards, starting with small yet impactful steps. Let's strive for accessible spaces, both physical and social, where everyone feels welcomed and valued. Let's amplify voices that advocate for inclusivity, fostering an environment where every individual's strengths and contributions are recognized and celebrated. At MaitreCare (www.maitrecare.com.au), we stand committed to creating a more inclusive and supportive world. We believe in empowering individuals, breaking barriers, and championing equality for all. Join us in this journey towards a more inclusive society. If you have questions or need support, reach out to us at support@maitrecare.com.au or call us at (07) 3073 2920. Together, let's build a world where everyone shines, regardless of their abilities. 🌍💙 #InclusionMatters #EqualityForAll #EmbraceDiversity
