“I have an idea for an app.”
As an iOS developer, I hear that a lot. I have ideas myself. The first thing I do is to try to prove the concept is valid and that there are users that could use such a thing. Research into the idea is an important first step. If I am still excited about it after looking at real world data, and who might use it, and I still feel I have got something, then a prototype is warranted.
I start by scribbling wire frames on paper. I find it is the quickest way to try multiple screen ideas in the shortest time.
I’ll then build a very basic prototype with mock data. I only build the core concept to see how the idea looks and feels in the hand. It is a great way to see what problems I didn’t anticipate, but it can also fire me up to take it to the next stage if I feel my idea is validated.
I had such an idea a few weeks ago, and I have a prototype in my hand. It is related to plants. My early assumption was that plants follow a certain growing cycle, but I soon found out that the reality is a lot more fussy than that. Nature, who knew? However, I adjusted my idea slightly and I still feel it will be useful. I’m now going to gather some real data for the prototype and then find potential users to see how they react to it, and get some valuable feedback.
If all goes well, I’ll develop an MVP (minimal viable product) for release on the Apple App Store, but that is a post for another time.
