🚀 Exciting news! JetZero has been selected by the US Department of the Air Force to build a full-scale blended wing body (BWB) demonstrator aircraft. This innovative design merges the aircraft body into its high-aspect-ratio wing, resulting in decreased aerodynamic drag by at least 30%. The BWB aircraft offers numerous advantages, including extended range, increased loiter time, and improved payload delivery efficiencies. According to Secretary of the Air Force, Frank Kendall, blended wing body aircraft have the potential to significantly reduce fuel demand and enhance global reach, making them a critical capability for national security strategy. JetZero, in collaboration with Northrop Grumman and Scaled Composites, will be working on the full-scale demonstrator, which is expected to undergo initial flight tests by the first quarter of 2027. Thanks to advancements in structural design, materials technology, and manufacturing, the BWB concept, which has been around for decades, is now closer to large-scale production. Not only will this technology benefit the military sector, but it also holds promise for the commercial industry. Passenger airlines and air freight companies can expect increased cabin or cargo space while enjoying decreased operational fuel costs. JetZero's CEO, Tom O'Leary, believes that the blended wing body is the ideal first step towards achieving zero carbon emissions. With the ability to achieve 50% lower fuel burn even with today's engines, the BWB offers the airframe efficiency required for a transition to zero carbon emissions propulsion in the future. In terms of efficiency, no other proposed aircraft comes close to the BWB. TURBO-RAMJET ENGINES The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" is a long-range, high-altitude, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed and manufactured by the American aerospace company Lockheed Corporation. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney J58 (turbo-ramjet engines) with 25,000 lbf (110 kN) thrust each. The J-58 engine is of the WRAPAROUND Turbo-ramjet type. At subsonic speed, it operates as a turbojet engine, while at high supersonic speeds, it operates as a ramjet engine, and at low supersonic speed, it combines both turbojet and ramjet operations. The different cases are illustrated on the T-S diagram. A detailed analysis of this engine, as well as the second type of turbo-ramjet (Over/under type), is given in my book (Aircraft Propulsion and Gas Turbine Engines, 2nd edition, Taylor & Francis/CRC Press, 2017). The third edition will be available soon.

3 things are involved in Aerospace Testing: Theoretical, Empirical Data (like aircraft), and Testing of the Aircraft in question. Experimental Aircraft will likely not have the same testing magnitude as Type Certificate tests of the Wing, Fuselage, and Empennage. Each of these would likely cost over a million dollars. Many lives are at stake.

One of the common misconceptions about #JetSpecs is that we only operate in the aerospace field. While my experience in aerospace certainly inspired the founding of the company, it is by no means the limit of our capabilities.

JetZero will receive $235 million over four years from the DoD's Defence Innovation Unit for this project, culminating in the first flight of the full-scale demonstrator by the first quarter of 2027. The company is collaborating with Northrop Grumman and Scaled Composites, and will be using Pratt & Whitney GTF engines. Pratt & Whitney GATORWORKS will also support JetZero in designing and integrating the propulsion system within the demonstrator. While the blended wing body concept has been around for decades, advancements in technology have made large-scale production achievable. Not only will this innovation benefit the defense industry, but it also has significant potential for commercial use.
