The importance of changing history begins with the understanding of our place in it. The last institution in Indiana closed its doors a mere 17 years ago. Has all that much of society changed in terms of inclusive communities? When was the last time you saw a person with a disability being a welcomed regular at your gym, your church, local restaurants, bars, and libraries? Community is at heart of what we are trying to do: how can we shift conversations and beliefs of people to truly demonstrate to families that their child, their sibling, their aunt, their coworker, their neighbor is welcome anywhere? Our state’s history is dark and sobering. We come historically from forced sterilization and seclusion, but can we revolutionize that narrative into something truly innovative? Our work demonstrates this by investing in the belief that once a person ages out of high school, they should continue to access life-changing Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapies. If our society believes that they are done learning and growing at 22, then that’s all that we believe people with disabilities are worth. We’re here to forever change that belief.

SAL Community Services' President & CEO, Marcy Mendenhall, shared about the Illinois Department of Early Childhood Act (IL HB5451) which would consolidate Illinois early childhood services into a single state agency as a means to enhance coordination, efficiency, and effectiveness. Modern Widows Club is planning another Widows' Health & Wellbeing Day at the Crosby Center for Health & Wellbeing. Huge gratitude to Winter Park Health Foundation for being the first to step forward and value #widows in Central FL as a community asset in which to invest. In 2023, we welcomed 120 registered participants, along with a few walk-ins, into a transformative experience that significantly benefited their health, social connections, and overall sense of well-being. It was impactful for them to feel cared about, seen, heard, and understood. Our initiatives have been instrumental in decreasing feelings of depression, exhaustion, confusion, and overwhelm, as well as reducing fear, anger, and disinterest in personal health. Conversely, they have enhanced confidence, joy, a sense of purpose and meaning, community connection and an interest in personal health and future opportunities. We refer to this positive impact as a community uplift for everyone involved. It's important to note the prevalence of #widowhood in our area: Winter Park, FL, is home to 1,600 widows, Orange County, FL, has 36,500 widows, and Seminole County, FL, counts 23,000 widows among its residents. Who are they, what do they need, how can we help? This classification is crucial because the residents, due to their needs for assistance with daily activities such as mobility, personal hygiene, and feeding, are considered disabled and are thus protected under the Federal Fair Housing Act. This video highlights a significant opportunity for creating specialized homes that cater to disabled seniors and veterans, offering them the care they deserve in a respectful and dignified environment. This approach not only supports a vulnerable segment of the population but also presents a viable business model that addresses an urgent social need.
