As an island, coastal erosion is a major area of concern. By deploying drones to monitor cliffs and coastal habitats, a clear view of what is going on can be achieved, reducing the risk to people. In addition, valuable data can be gathered on fragile and inaccessible wildlife ecosystems. Drones can offer so much more than just a pretty picture.

Oyster reefs are considered one of the most imperiled marine habitats due to overfishing, disease, and habitat destruction. Working with resource managers from North Carolina to Florida, #NCCOS is developing novel approaches using uncrewed aerial systems (i.e., drones) to monitor and assess the condition of intertidal oyster reefs. This space is heating up with more interesting use cases. Drone tech will be synonymous with AI very soon. Drones are being considered to not just automate laborious work, but also achieve tasks that are difficult for physical labour. Some of them are mundane like survey and mapping of large land parcels; but some of them like these are interesting. Protection of fauna and flora, wildlife conservation, tree/plant enumeration and monitoring, surveillance, etc. is now possible with safety and speed. Although it looks easy in films, drone flying requires actual talent and technological know-how. And let's be honest—even the most experienced pilots occasionally run into difficulties. While you are heading out for assignments, make sure you have adequate battery backups. Make an effort to not fly alone; always have a companion or other support nearby. Seek bird species, territorial birds. They may believe that your drone belongs to a different species. Aim to avoid areas with high radiation levels and wires. Obey the laws of the government.
