So we now know that there will be a general election on 4th July. US Independence Day no less. Coincidental, auspicious or neither? What we do know now is that the rest of the listening events that had been scheduled on the proposed changes to the non dom rules have now been cancelled. It also makes it extremely unlikely that we will get draft legislation on these rules for the summer as previously expected. All this adds to further uncertainty for international individuals looking to arrange their tax affairs in the most tax effective manner. It is still very likely that whoever wins the election will implement some significant reforms in this area. Whether there will be a relaxation on the period of time that the remittance basis can be claimed is tough to call. Same goes for the concessions proposed in the Budget which would have allowed funds to be brought to the UK at a reduced tax rate in specific circumstances. With the US election this year as well, now would be a really good time to be able to time travel or have a crystal ball. In the absence of those we will just keep having open discussions with clients and guiding them the absolute best we can in the circumstances. #election2024 #nondoms

With the election looming on Thursday, the two main parties have stated that they won’t put up Corporation Tax, Income Tax or VAT (except for private school fees by Labour). And yet, they have big spending plans for the NHS, defence, education and the environment. So, we can probably expect some sort of U-turn on these tax policies in the coming months irrespective of who is in government. Our top rate of Corporation Tax is currently the lowest in the G7 which is designed to encourage business investment, but that has failed to materialise in recent years with UK investment lagging behind its G7 counterparts by around 5-8% of GDP. We have to wonder then if business investment would be at all changed by an increase in Corporation Tax – what do you think?
