Aurora’s autonomous vehicles have completed 93% of their safety case, demonstrating capabilities like avoiding debris and handling emergency situations without human intervention. Kodiak, showcasing its latest model at CES 2024, emphasizes redundancy with multiple cameras, radar, and LiDAR units to ensure robust performance. Both companies are poised to significantly reduce the reliance on human drivers, paving the way for 24/7 operations and potentially lower emissions. A large distribution center in Texas now has the "world's first" fully autonomous truck yard. The autonomous technology company ISEE launched in 2017 with AI research from MIT. The 1.7 million square foot distribution center has 750 trailer staging bays and belongs to an unnamed Fortune 100 company. The autonomous yard truck fleet reportedly operates "across all shifts, day and night, rain or shine." According to the press release, key benefits include new capacity, seamless integration, workforce development, and enhanced safety: "The US National Safety Council reports that transportation and warehousing have the highest rate of worker injury of all occupations, and being struck by equipment is one of the most common causes. By eliminating the potential for human error, the autonomous truck yard can dramatically reduce accidents and collisions.
