A list of apologies, hopes, and dreams. To whom it may concern: I’m sorry that I wasn’t your prototypical tech employee who had connections, family members in the industry, and/or a Silicon Valley pedigree. I’m sorry that I didnt attend an Ivy League school. I was never top of my class either. I’m sorry that I’m first generation and all of this was new to me. To my ancestors in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and Dominican Republic 🇩🇴, being in this position was just a dream and never a possibility. I’m sorry that it took me a few years to understand corporate lingo. I guess using the word “jawn”, “yo”, and others made me less suitable for the job. I’m sorry that recruiting from the city of Philadelphia wasn’t on your list of talent pools until the pandemic happened. I’m sorry that I grew up in neighborhoods that many of my peers today would describe as the “ghetto”. Most importantly, I’m sorry that you didn’t believe in me. 🤷🏻♂️ Because the reality is, every day you are passing up on talent in underserved communitues. Talent that doesn’t check all of the boxes and considered a “risk”. So yes, that recruiter, non profit organization, and/or start up is doing everything possible to teach and bring opportunities to the communities. We are also doing our best in corporate to open the doors for others via ERG initiatives and outreach programs. Let’s support, love each other, and grow together. In the meantime, give that student or experienced employee that doesn’t fit the “normal” category a chance.
