Experiencing great public infrastructure is one of life’s great joys. Many New Yorkers understand the expansive feeling of walking into Grand Central Station, cycling across the West Side Highway, or strolling over the Brooklyn Bridge. Beautiful infrastructure is life-affirming because it serves as a visual testament of public interest prioritized and executed with excellence. Revisiting Naoshima in Japan this week for the first time since 2015, I was struck by the bold vision and profound impact of the island’s iconic design, which stands as a radical act of regional activism.
