Meet Cindy Cohen, principal at KPMG US who helped organize this year's Community Impact Day event in NYC at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall. KPMG joined forces with NYC Department for the Aging to present older New Yorkers with information on the department’s Friendly Visiting Program. Afterwards, each older adult in attendance paired up with a KPMG employee volunteer to shop at a local farmers market, using $25 in coupons from the Farmers Market Nutrition Program and a bonus $25 matched by KPMG. #welovenyc #NewYork #CommunityImpactDay https://lnkd.in/e4mYAvWn

What would older adults change about our food system? Here are the top 5 things (in order): 1. Reduce additives/processed foods 2. Reduce food costs 3. Improve access to food 4. Address ‘greed’ in food industry 5. Reduce fast food use/availability The data comes from a study of 26 #OlderAdults by Roni Neff and colleagues (link below). What's interesting about this? These priorities align with current food activism efforts. The opportunity? Engaging older adults - their stories, skills, perspectives - in movements such as #FoodJustice and #FoodSovereignty. Intentionally collaborating with older adults can strengthen food activism. Advocacy is for people of all ages. And, we're stronger together. Intergenerational collaborations will: • Strengthen social movements. • Empower people of all ages. • Bridge generational divides. Generations working together will help re-stitch our collective social fabric, while making meaningful social change. -- 👉🏾 My vision is to unite generations and revive social connections using food. Follow along as I share the process! ♻️ Found this insightful? Share it! What an incredible first day at the National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference! Today has been a truly inspiring experience, filled with powerful discussions and passionate advocates dedicated to ending food insecurity. It’s amazing to see so many committed individuals and organizations coming together with a shared mission. The importance of advocacy in this space cannot be overstated. When we unite our voices, we amplify our impact and drive meaningful change. Working together, we can influence policy, create sustainable solutions, and ensure that everyone, especially our most vulnerable populations, has access to nutritious food. Our efforts are crucial for children, seniors, low-income families, and marginalized communities who are disproportionately affected by food insecurity. By focusing on these vulnerable groups, we can make a significant difference in their lives and build a healthier, more equitable society. Here’s to the next steps and continued collaboration in our fight against hunger. Let’s keep pushing forward and making a difference! #citizensinn #EndHunger #homelessnessprevention #AdvocacyMatters #FoodSecurityForAll #SupportVulnerablePopulations

As we continue to build momentum around our mission of increasing #FoodAccess by supporting Black, Brown and Indigenous Farmers, we are so grateful for the number of community partners who are willing to roll up their sleeves and #JoinTheFight. Since the very first conversation, the good folks at UCare and the #UCareFoundation have been willing to support our efforts in increasing #HealthEquity within communities of Color across the region. This past Wednesday, because of their support, we were able to host over 40+ #Minnesota based, BIPOC Farmers for the first session of our 10-week, virtual Route 1 Minnesota Emerging Farmers Institute. The Institute is focused on helping these wonderful #Farmers not only grow good food, but also helping them grow their business. In this way, we are not only increasing food access, but also increasing #EconomicDevelopment for #FarmFamilies in communities of need across the country. It is through the support of these intersectional themes that we truly make #Impact in our world. Route 1 will continue to seek out and leverage these types of inclusive relationships and pathways towards health equity. Whether it's a large corporation, a university, a foundation, a community NGO, a family or an individual, we believe that there is a place for ALL OF US at this table and within this mission. Won't you join us? #LetsGetToWork #TogetherWeWin!

The journey of raising awareness about the dangers of unhealthy foods and drinks has been an incredible eye-opener! 💡 From public sensitization campaigns to policy advocacy, every step reaffirms the importance of promoting healthier choices to protect public health. Here's a glimpse from one of the explainer videos I did, to dive into what Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) are and why the #SSBTax matters. This tax is about saving lives, encouraging better habits, building a healthier future and a source of #HealthFinancing. Healthy food options shouldn’t be a privilege but the norm. #PublicHealth #PolicyAdvocacy #FoodJustice

Did You Know that Approximately 37% of Republican voters benefit from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Yet, Project 2025 proposes significantly reducing or eliminating these crucial benefits. This could deeply impact many families, including those historically supporting the policies and politicians behind this initiative. At The Race Card LLC, we believe in raising awareness about the potential consequences of these policy changes. Understanding how such decisions could affect communities across the political spectrum is vital. Let's engage in meaningful dialogue and advocate for policies that support all Americans. #SNAP #Project2025 #PolicyImpact #TheRaceCardLLC #FoodSecurity

#Women make up the majority of those caring for animals. The revenue they generate from rearing of animals often contributes to improved nutrition and child education. As a result, when PPR strikes, women and their offspring are directly impacted. By eliminating PPR or peste des petits ruminants, we can empower women and give children better perspectives for the future. Learn more about the disease: https://lnkd.in/eiZSFF8f

I am often asked: “why does addressing food insecurity for children and youth matter so much?” Rite Aid Healthy Futures has endeavored to answer this important question by working closely with community leaders, innovative organizations and resilient neighborhoods over the last two years through our Strengthening Cities initiative. It has been quite a motivating and high-stakes journey. The “Nourishing Neighborhoods” report offers many strategies and stories across six great American cities, uplifting opportunities ranging from youth leadership and school partnerships to urban farming and food systems. Ultimately, I believe there are three compelling answers to “why healthy food?” is so critical for our children: 1) There is a direct line between nutritious food, good health and racial equity to improve health outcomes and ultimately prevent many chronic and life-threatening medical conditions during youth or adulthood, which disproportionately affect Black and Brown neighbors and neighborhoods. 2) Nutritious food is the “everyday factor” that unlocks value to other vital social determinants of health, such as education. When kids aren’t hungry at school, their cognitive function and learning potential increases dramatically. 3) By listening and learning from front-line organizations and local residents, we can provide much-needed agency to youth, plus dignity and sovereignty to communities, creating hope and health that spans the seasons of years and lives. Healthy food matters at every age and stage of life. It singularly and pervasively touches everyone all the time. But with one in five Americans facing food insecurity, we must move with more purpose and urgency to eradicate hunger in America. It is a moral and social imperative. Please read the “Nourishing Neighborhoods” report and share your own experiences and perspectives. Together, let’s author a new narrative and change conditions so healthy futures are truly attainable for all! - Matt https://lnkd.in/gnApAyhT

Congress is nearing a potential deal to fully fund WIC in upcoming appropriations. Unfortunately, the deal could involve the adoption of a “SNAP-choice” pilot program, whereby participating states would restrict SNAP purchases to only “nutrient dense” foods. The “SNAP-choice” pilot program ignores the fact that many households make the food “choices” they do as a result of the many constraints on their ability to purchase healthy food, such as significant time constraints (poverty is a full-time job), the high cost of fresh and nutrient dense foods (paired with low benefit levels), and limited access to nutrient dense foods in many communities such as those characterized by food deserts. A “SNAP-choice” pilot program will not nudge SNAP participants to make ‘better’ choices. It will just be another barrier on top of the many barriers that low-income households already face in accessing food.
