End of year is here ... are you a retail manager expecting a nice (and well-deserved) bonus this quarter/year? If so, congratulations! I'd like to recommend that you find some formula to share a large portion (30% or more) with the people you supervise that helped you earn that. Doing so is incentive, not reward. Your staff will put in extra effort and focus on results when they know it will also benefit them personally. They will work harder for YOU when they know that you are willing to demonstrate your appreciation for their hard work by sharing the bounty. As managers, we talk "team" all day long .. this is one way to walk that talk. Added bonus ---> Your team retention rate will skyrocket.

What are some common challenges of being a department manager in the retail industry? ✏️ As a department manager you act as an intermediary between the team and the store manager, so you commonly do not have as much time to fulfill your own tasks as you would like. You have to manage the needs of the team, tasks delegated by your manager, and still find time to monitor sell-through and partner with the merchants for assortment needs to ensure the teams success.

Nothing more critical to drive talent retention that starting, from day 1, to teach the ropes of your culture and values. When companies put more focus in onboarding their new employees as part of the #EmployeeExperience, they maximize their engagement and can identify quicker in the journey if the new talent is well fitted to succeed. I get asked alot of times on what made me successful in running my businesses. My answer was simple. Rule #1: Take care of your people. If you take care of your people, your people will take care of you! Rule #2: Take care of your customers. If you take care of your customers, your customers will take care of you!! It's not rocket science! But so many people and companies get caught up in projects or the numbers and sometimes forget about these two critical things. If you always focus on these 2 things, everything else will fall into place. I promise! 😉 Because if you take care of your people then you build a culture where your people love to come to work at. Where they view each other as family. Where it is a TEAM TEAM TEAM mentality. Which the customer experience is the recipient of getting a positive more wonderful experience. Because they see people who truly care about them and all pitching in to take care of them. Plus, this leads to people wanting to join this "team" and be a part of this winning family oriented culture. I can testify to this as well as many of my past associates or customers. I am not saying that we were perfect. No. But we strove for perfection. And we had very little to no turnover. Extremely high promotions from within the program. Many who went from part-timers to full-timers to supervisors to upper management. And I have had a handful that became store managers (mostly women). Over the last 10 years, while many businesses struggled to hire, we were blessed to always have a strong base and a waiting list of hires. Typically only replacing my part-timers from high school and/or college after they finished school and went away. Hiring was never an issue. Thus, culture matters! And at the same time, I was also very blessed by God to also have successful year after year in sales. A result of taking care of our people! Anyone who knows me knows those are my 2 biggest passions. Because I firmly believe in being an advocate for my people and my customers, always! 😉

First quarter. Its almost the end of first quarter. When I was working as a store manager, there will be a meeting to discuss what we've achieved so far, but only for store's performance. Something I regret that I mostly forgot asked my team... ...what was their achievement. It hits me recently, I jotted down my achievement, but I used to forget took notes my team member's achievement. Little advice if you're the leader of quarterly meeting: > Celebrate any kind of your achievement. Number of sales. New member of your team. Recognize help from your member. Recognize effort from your member. The little achievement, might help the whole team achieve success.

My two cents on Starbucks negative same store sales will have to do with in-store partner development and supervision. As a retired partner, I'm still pretty active in my local group of 3 to 4 stores. I've not once in the last 2+ years in PCB, ran into a multi-unit manager or anyone clearly standing out as the Store Manager. I don't observe any development of team members or a focus on coffee. The service level is good, but far from the potential of Great. In my humble opinion, Starbucks should start with a review of its DMs and RVPs. How often are they in stores? What's the length of their visits? What do they do while in stores? Is there a focus on team development? Are they skilled at evaluation of the Store Experience and take quality time to speak with partners and guests. Put quality time up against the Store and Partner Experience and I'm convinced you'll be rewarded with positive same store sales, plus safeguard yourself from the threat of unionization.

Excited to share that I've been awarded the "2023 Most Improved AE of the Year" for Team Atlantic at SpotOn! Certainly, 2023 has been challenging personally and professionally but also a very rewarding year for me. Reflecting on my first complete year at SpotOn, here are some key takeaways (still learning!): -It's okay to professionally redefine yourself in the business environment: New country, position, industry. It doesn't matter the age, just the willingness to try. -It's perfectly fine to seek help when things don't go as expected- Friends, Family, and colleagues can play a crucial role in helping regain focus. -Pressure is inevitable, and it's part of the game. However, it should be balanced with moments of joy and laughter. Finding that equilibrium is key to sustainable success. Thanks to everyone who supported me throughout the past year!
