I was living in New York in 1986 and you couldn't watch television without seeing a "Crazy Eddie" commercial. They were so bad that they were good and they got your attention. You had to chuckle when you saw these ads. Memorable yes. I still remember them perfectly today. How can we make our marketing today as memorable and fun as it was back then. Do you like watching commercials? 🎩 I LOVE watching them. Many are a masterclasss on persuading people. Some are just bad. But, even the bad ones are "good" because the marketer accomplished their job. I remember the product or service. You might remember this one from the 70's/80's "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop?" The little boy asks Mr. Turtle, and Mr. Turtle sends him to Mr. Owl. Well, you may have seen this commercial lately. It seems to begin circulating this time of year until the end of the holiday season. Mr. Owl says it only takes three licks (then one hefty crunch) to get to the center. It is a classic commercial that sparks nostalgic childhood emotions for me. Nowadays, the commercial is shortened. Often we only see the boy and Mr. Owl. But, (after a bit of research for this post) there is also a cow and a fox. 😀 that I hadn't remembered. Food for thought, perhaps? Today, my colleague Melson Miranda and I explored the enduring appeal of nostalgia in advertising, using the Downy—Rinse & Refresh | Tell me why—featuring Backstreet Boys advertisement as a case in point. Despite being a year old, this ad continues to demonstrate the timeless effectiveness of nostalgia in advertising. 'Back in the day' or 'looking back at the good old days' still evokes strong sentiments that can bring a brand's story to light in a subtle yet powerful way. Incorporating pop culture references of the past also does the trick. It's a very interesting way to use a simple idea and make something cool and impactful. There are many good examples of using nostalgia in advertising and as a compelling brand strategy. I thought I'd share the Downy commercial here to start a conversation about nostalgia or to enjoy a fun commercial to share inspiration. Another early fave as I shake off the post-Thanksgiving cobwebs. Yes, this spot from Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority - LVCVA is fun, colorful, loud and upbeat. Expected. Typical. Par the course, right? Yet, it's still interesting. Let's be real. It's tough to market Sin City differently. Time and again. You want to create something new and engaging, but you need to play to what makes Vegas...well, Vegas. I happen to think this strikes the balance remarkably well as it promotes Las Vegas as the 2024 Super Bowl host city and encourages travel to take in all in. Love the "Excessive Celebration" wrapper, the use of Tobe and Ochocinco and all the subtle and not-so-subtle nods to the city, the big game and all the games to be played in Vegas. Personally, I think the change.org element is a bit much, but I guess the PR guy in me can at least see the thinking in adding a layer to the story (maybe?).
