How do I know what great looks like in hiring?* Very simple! Big tasting/testing sample. I have met amazing people at work before. Let me explain 👇🏽 If I go to the bakery 🥐 there are many indicators ( examplary by the texture, look, smell, taste, how the bakery works) I can judge if what I’m eating is good, great, mediocre or miserable. It’s because I have eaten in many bakeries around the world, I have passionately studied differences of traditional Polish, French, Italian, Portuguese baking or yeast vs massa madre dough - I can go as deep as my time and cognitive abilities allow me to. And my hunger in this case. Analogy to hiring: I met thousands of people around the world, interviewed and tried to understand their working capabilities. I hired and failed many times, and most importantly I saw amazing people at work, some of which I hired, some I failed to hire. This is why I know after 10 years what great looks like. Does it always work? Naaah, life is too beautiful complex. But if you don’t design your system - you will have more problems in identification of indicators and direction which way to go. *I know what great looks like for me, it doesn’t mean it will translate to what YOUR great looks like - we might value different things, but like with food - we might have different taste but some objectively superior aspects will be shared for great work performance. Stick to the basics.

I really like this approach to hiring: Esben Warming Pedersen at Nordea is looking for a Product Owner to join his team of 90+ colleagues working in the Digital team serving Large Corporate customers. Instead of the generic job ad, Esben has recorded a video presentation outlining the team, the situation and the need for the role. Right at the end he even highlights the bank's super Copenhagen office facilities (Nordea's Metro HQ, is excellent). These are important aspects to touch upon for any potential candidates in a highly competitive region. I think this approach by Esben is inspired and, I would hope, likely to really increase the quality (and possibly quantity) of candidates that will apply as a result. It also immediately answers a lot of the basic questions that you might not easily answer in the text of a job advert. Plus, I would suggest that the human aspect of hearing Esben describe the role and the opportunity will be very compelling to the target audience. How are you reaching new talent to come and work with you? Have you considered adopting a similar approach to Esben and Nordea? Good luck Esben and nice work.
