I’ve placed editors and remote talent with dozens of companies—all from right here in Indonesia. Indonesia has often been overlooked as a source of remote talent, mainly due to concerns about English proficiency. But let me tell you, that’s changing fast. The younger generation here is more globalized and fluent in English than ever before. I’m proud of Indonesia, and I’m committed to placing more Indonesian talent with U.S. companies. Three learnings from my two months in Tokyo: 1) It's a UX paradise. Everything from taking the tube to taking a dump is paradise. Signage, jingles, multi-lingual machines, bird sounds on platforms (??), heated toilet seats, separate bagging areas in supermarkets (!!), I could go on. And best of all, if you're ever confused, a smiling Japanese person will always help you. 2) It's marketing heaven. Japanese are the only people that immediately understand what a copywriter is. Even if they don't speak English. And it makes sense. Look up, look down, left and right and you'll see the beauty of branding is deeply embedded in their culture. I don't understand Japanese, but I can't help being inspired. 3) It's peacefully chaotic. Tokyo is the biggest city in the world. But it works. People respect each other. People queue. People bow. People stand on the right and walk on the left. People take their litter home (good luck finding a bin). In short, people give a shit. That means you can enjoy a world of options without losing your mind. It's just the place to be. ありがとう, Tokyo. Until next time.
