It has certainly been a breezy 24 hours in West Wales! Storm Darragh has left a serious trail behind... It's had me thinking back to a really interesting design session we did jointly with PCNPA planners, PCC planners and a group of local agents and architects last year. As part of the session we talked about the particular challenges of responding to the climate and geography of West Wales. We discussed how traditional design focused on defending against the weather - typically using materials such as slate, render, small windows and a roof pattern that braced against the wind. Modern life, new technology and our greater ability to insulate has opened up design opportunities that were not previously available and can result in some really exciting contemporary design. The desire to maximise a view is now often a far higher priority than it was for our ancestors, changing how buildings seek to 'face' an environment. We also have new climate issues to resolve and opportunities to harness renewable energy as never before within our building design. BUT the consensus in our discussion group was that there is often merit in considering and incorporating traditional approaches and materials in a design solution, sometimes whilst adding a modern twist. Doing this successfully not only achieves a sustainable design but one which ties into the local place in question. The Agents and Architects who attended kindly shared particular schemes that they had been involved with. Most interesting from my perspective were those brave enough to share some that they thought could have been improved, which provided very valuable food for thought for all of us.
