Passive House models provide tremendous insight to design teams and help drive better building performance. However, these models come at a cost in both time and money for teams to create. Ed May, Partner in the consulting firm bldgtyp, an architecture and consulting firm based in Brooklyn, NY, joined the Accelerator to dive into the question of Passive House models and discuss how teams can get the most value out of these important tools. 🌍 Always good to keep an eye peeled for what professionals are doing in other regions of our globe! Thank you to Ed May for this presentation and to Passive House Accelerator for their fantastic work! Let me share here this truly inspiring presentation going deep into experienced pro-tips: https://lnkd.in/eQaeKYjf Maximize the Value of Your Passive House Models – Key Insights from Ed May 🌱 Here are my key takeaways from this presentation: Passive house modelling is invaluable but requires experience and good judgment: 🤝 Collaborate with consultants early and integrate them into the design process. 🔄 Model a range of outcomes, not just one scenario. ⚖️ Build in excess capacity to manage risk. 🏗️ Focus on early design phases to avoid unnecessary complexity. 📏 Use conservative estimates for key variables like U-values and airtightness. What are your thoughts on this presentation? Any pro tips or materials to share? I’m always hungry and forever curious—send them my way! 💡

Its been a year that I added InQI into my profile here. Getting a lot of emails from friends and colleagues. Its been a year of a lot of ups and downs as a startup but its been fun and rewarding. In late fall 2023, during our FY24 planning Bay Scenery, Inc, my management team and I brainstormed ideas as how to expand our design and build business. As we evaluated each one, a recurring bottleneck emerged: architectural plans. These often took months to produce due to one major challenge—access to accurate, timely data. This realization led us to dig deeper, and we identified a foundational truth: in our industry, everything begins with a parcel of land. Understanding its data parameters is like the "Hello World" of architectural planning. Over the following months, we devised a plan for what would become InQI. To ensure our intellectual property was protected, we collaborated with great patent firm and successfully filed a comprehensive patent before diving into development. Now, a year later, InQI is a fully operational, AI-driven platform optimized on AWS. It provides architects, engineers, and builders with property-based data in seconds, serving thousands of users across the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia—with plans to expand globally in 2025. What began as a local business challenge has transformed into a cutting-edge, data-driven platform empowering professionals worldwide.

Too busy to draw-up a Solution Architecture diagram? You soon will be, as no-one will be aware of your estate - including you. 😱 Nightmares follow. Blog post and video next week, war stories to share. TLDR: awareness of a full solution is vital for productivity, profitability, morale, and staff retention. And there's no better way of sharing the needed knowledge than an absorbable pretty picture.

We should design the way our teams communicate with one another the same way we design our systems. Create some scenarios. Describe the expected inputs and outputs. Validate them. Define your endpoints. Let your team architecture and design emerge as new functionality is required. If you can do it with your application, you can do it with your team. Conway's law says you can.

Differentiating your business in a crowded industry doesn’t have to be complicated – it’s all about understanding what makes YOU unique and getting clear about who you want to do business with. Provided there's no conflict of interest - which is clarified upfront - it can often pay dividends to work with a studio who has proven experience of the industry you're in. The beauty of this approach? Clients don’t have to explain how their industry works from scratch – already having a solid understanding of the market can help move projects on faster. Take the architecture sector, for example: we’ve had the privilege of working with several architect practices over the years and each one is distinct. What makes one business special is totally different from what makes another stand out. At 39steps, that's where we add value, working closely with wonderful people to uncover the unique qualities that set them and their businesses apart – even when they’re in the same industry as another client. Ready to discover what makes YOUR business special in 2025? 🙌 👋
