One thing I’ve noticed in traveling to many places around the world that are trying to promote ecotourism or sustainability is that there is a huge lack in fixing the main issues that would make the country a better place as a whole when it comes to public works. I am currently in Jordan, a country that gets a huge amount of tourism dollars, yet the water from the tap is not suited for drinking and trash litters almost all vacation land near areas of populations. Countries need to work on fixing the issues of water treatment and trash removal especially if we want to kick plastic to the curb and reduce the global pollution problem. Making a country dependent on bottled water is a huge piece of the puzzle that we all fail to discuss in global talks about plastic and ocean pollution. #waste #water #sustainability

In August, the US Department of Interior announced plans to phase out single-use plastics on public lands within the next decade. That means tourists at Niagara Falls will need to start bringing their own rain coat or get a little wet. It’s the least they can do to preserve one of our planet’s most stunning natural views—to say nothing of the region’s rich biodiversity. The Falls drain four of the five Great Lakes before flowing into Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and eventually the Atlantic Ocean. It demonstrates one of the Seven Principles of Ocean Literacy: that “the ocean and humans are inextricably connected.”  All waters flow toward the sea, and their microplastics do too. Maybe the ponchos of Niagara Falls get recycled as advertised, and maybe they don’t. But there’s something obscene about a sea of plastic churned out to shield spectators from the elements on their Maid of the Mist Tour. Today, let's learn more about eco-tourism as an alternative to mass tourism in the Philippines 🌿 The Philippines is home to 105 eco-tourism sites nestled within 248 protected areas. 🌱 In Cebu, one of the most popular ecotourism sites is the 5,800-hectare Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, which encompasses a variety of ecosystems, including intertidal sand flats, mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and islets. This sanctuary, off Mactan island, is the Philippines’ first Ramsar site, a title given to wetlands of international importance. 🍀 Ecotourism in Olango Island has given fishermen's wives jobs in mangrove conservation. The group used to depend on low-earning seashell harvesting and illegal mangrove cutting. As we continue in our efforts to offset our Carbon Footprint here at Shoes For Crews, we have enlisted the help of Trees for All 👣 While we aim to reduce our Carbon Footprint, there are undeniably areas where this isn't always possible. 🚨 Today, we would like to draw your #attention to a sore #environmental problem that requires immediate action, for which we managed to take measures - the presence of discarded tires on one of the beautiful beaches of Nessebar. As concerned citizens, it is our #responsibility to preserve the natural beauty of our coastal areas and ensure a healthy environment for both current and future generations. 🏖Today - 06.02.2023 the shores of Nessebar were marred by the ugly sight of discarded tires, posing a threat to the delicate marine ecosystem and the overall well-being of our #community. These #abandoned tires not only disturb the scenic #nature that attracts tourists and locals alike, but also pose a serious environmental hazard. 🌱 The environmental impact of discarded tires is far-reaching. They can release harmful chemicals and toxins into the surrounding soil and water, endangering #marinelife and disrupting the delicate balance of our #ecosystem. In addition, visual #pollution affects the tourism industry, which is an important part of our local economy. 👥 Today, local citizens have already organized themselves to clean up these discarded tires from our favorite beaches. They have already taken action and organized a public event on 07.02.2023. on the respective beach. Our question is, why should the local citizens with their own transport and efforts take up this initiative, why did the local municipality not undertake to organize its own initiative for their removal?

How the tourism industry can be responsible for its environmental footprint? The tourism industry can take steps to be kinder to the environment. Hotels and accommodations can save electricity and water by using energy-efficient technologies and encouraging guests to reuse towels. They can also reduce waste by implementing recycling programs and cutting down on single-use plastics. When tourists explore new places, they can choose local products and services, supporting the community and reducing the carbon footprint of transportation. It's important to respect the local culture and wildlife, and businesses should work with communities to ensure that tourism benefits everyone. Governments can create and enforce rules to protect the environment, and tourists can play their part by being mindful of their impact on the places they visit.
