A big privilege for Pathways to be invited to the First #WhiteHouse Summit for Concrete Innovation. Alex Cooper, our co-founder, represented us in a discussion on sustainability, innovation and EPDs. The focus on sustainability is absolutely critical with US government (Federal, State and Local) responsible for more than 50% of all cement purchasing. This means, when the government moves, the market moves. Thank you for Vivin Hegde, Zacua Ventures, Andres Clarens and Suyog P. for the invitation. It was great to see friends from across the ecosystem: Chris Ward, Leah Ellis, Titan Cement Company SA and many more.

The European region has the highest number of manufacturers of cross #laminatedtimber and is currently leading in production due to the presence of major manufacturers such as Mayr-Melnhof Holz. Due to the adoption of strategies such as mergers & acquisitions and investments & acquisitions, further advancements in the market are expected. Cross laminated #timber itself has been in use for decades, particularly in this region. Interest in the material is surging along with concern about the #greenhouse-gas emissions associated with #concrete and #steel. The production of #constructionmaterials such as steel, cement, and #glass accounts for 10% of #globalenergy-related CO2 emissions, according to a United Nations report. Cross-laminated timber and other #engineeredwoodproducts, on the other hand, can improve the environment in three ways: trees collect and store #carbon as they develop; long-lived #woodproducts lock in carbon; and these goods may be utilized in many circumstances instead of high-impact materials like concrete. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬: Major players operating in the cross laminated timber include Mayr-Melnhof Holz (Austria), Stora Enso (Finland), Binderholz GmbH (Austria), Eugen Decker Holzindustrie KG (Germany), Hasslacher Holding GmbH (Austria), Schilliger Holz AG (Switzerland), KLH Massivholz GmbH (Austria), Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation (Canada), XLam NZ Limited (New Zealand), and others. #engineeredwood #wood #energy #woodindustry #construction #constructionindustry #CLTmarket #CLT #adhesivebonded #adhesivebond #fastend #residential

Reducing our carbon footprint with lower carbon solutions like calcined clays is a key part of our decarbonization journey. Great to see these first projects being delivered with learnings to help accelerate implementation & adoption in our operations & industry.
Head of R&D & Innovation | Cement at Holcim - Leading research and innovation efforts, driving the development of sustainable construction materials and technologies, overseeing a team to bring new solutions to market.
🌱 At Holcim, we're committed to decarbonizing construction by scaling up the use of calcined clays, a cutting-edge, low-emission material that powers our ECOPlanet range of low-carbon cements. Our journey began in 2021 with the launch of the first ECOPlanet calcined clay cement in France, followed by Italy in 2022, Spain and Mexico in 2023. And we're just getting started—more exciting product launches are planned for 2024! 🚀 Read more about how we're making low-carbon construction a reality in International Cement Review. https://lnkd.in/e4uapGWj Congrats to Amith Kalathingal for this overview and to Antigone Karvounarakis Delton for the support. #HolcimInnovation #BuildingProgress #CalcinedClay

It's been a major milestone week for Sublime Systems, which has signed not one but two partnerships with the world's biggest cement manufacturers: CRH and our Terawatt partner Holcim! Together, this $75M investment and pre-paid offtake of Sublime Cement from its first commercial plant in Holyoke, MA will accelerate the speed at which Sublime Cement is in our buildings everywhere—with 90% less CO2 emissions than today's cement. "By pairing our expertise in electrochemical technology and innovation with CRH's and Holcim’s well-oiled machines in cement operations and distribution, we have the best possible shot at advancing our breakthrough technology with the scale and urgency both the massive global construction industry and the climate crisis demand." 🏗 These partnerships are a perfect lesson in how climate-focused corporates can leverage their scale and resources to bolster climate solutions while meeting their own decarbonization goals. They're also a gold-star example of how our community of startups collaborates with our corporate partners—since becoming a Greentown partner, Holcim has attended multiple startup pitch events for our #buildingtech members and served on our Industry Leadership Council. 🤝 Learn more about Holcim's investment: https://lnkd.in/es9vKFwn Read more in Bloomberg by Michelle Ma: https://lnkd.in/gQxN48M6

Cocoon's Green Cement Solution Attracts Funding to Transform Steel Industry - Cocoon, a forward-thinking startup committed to addressing the climate crisis, has recently secured £4.2 million in pre-seed funding. The company aims to decarbonize heavy industries by developing low-carbon construction materials, including green cement, which could revolutionize how we build infrastructure in the face of a rapidly growing urban population. A World Economic Forum estimate highlights the need for sustainable solutions: by 2060, the world's floor area is predicted to quadruple, the same as building a metropolis the size of New York every month for the next forty years. The immense population growth requires materials such as steel and concrete, essential for building new homes and infrastructure. However, these materials already account for 14.5% of global CO2 emissions, contributing significantly to climate change. Click the link below to read the full story... https://lnkd.in/d9hPec6r

Ahlstrom has signed an agreement to divest Aspa pulp mill in Sweden to Sweden Timber. Aspa pulp mill, established in 1927, has a market pulp capacity of less than 200,000 tons per year, making it an outlier in Ahlstrom's product portfolio. As Aspa celebrates its 101st anniversary, Arauco’s new mill, Project Sucuriu, will be set to begin production, achieving the same 200,000 tons output in just 20 days. Why has this mill caught Sweden Timber’s attention? As a sawmills operator, they might integrate process leftovers into the pulp mill. Hjortkvarn facility, just 58 km (or 36 miles) from Aspa, could provide a significant cost savings advantage. #pulp #pulpandpaper #pulpandpaperindustry #packaging #packagingindustry #strategy #tissue #m&a #timber #sawmills #wood

"In the context of GREENKEY SOLUTIONS, LOESCHE provides a solution to fully recycle crushed concrete on an industrial scale to make it available for cement production." The S/Crete technology for concrete recycling, demonstrates that full-scale industrial recycling is not only possible but also highly efficient. This patented process, made possible through selective grinding in LOESCHE vertical roller mills, provides a water-free, low-energy solution with a minimal carbon footprint. The versatility of S/Crete allows it to be scaled to various sizes, including mobile plants, and is applicable to all concrete types. The resulting materials have diverse applications, potentially reducing CO₂ emissions beyond their use as aggregates in fresh concrete. Concrete4Change just raised £2.5M to revolutionize the construction industry. If you care about sustainability and innovation, this is big news! Here's why: CO2 in concrete: Construction accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions, and they’re tackling this head-on by permanently trapping CO2 in concrete. Stronger, greener concrete: Their additive not only strengthens concrete by 20% but also transforms it into a carbon sink, reducing emissions. Scaling up: With founders Dr. Sid Pourfalah, Dr. Michael Wise, and Dalraj Nijjar at the helm, and major backing, they’re moving from lab to pilot projects with big names like Goldbeck and Siam Cement Group. If they can help eliminate 8% of the world's CO2 emissions, could this be a billion-dollar solution? How crucial is cutting CO2 in your industry? #Sustainability #GreenTech #Innovation
