Half of the vehicles produced in 2040 will still depend on ICE technology

Today is a great day for the #automotive industry as we take a big further step towards the goal of cleaner mobility and a better world. A lot has happened across companies and OEMs themselves to focus on the acceleration of production of Electric Vehicles, but much less has been done or talked recently about the >60% of vehicles that will still have some sort of Internal Combustion Engines by 2030 and much beyond.  I keep thinking that there is an opportunity for these vehicles to have as big as a contribution as the EVs themselves.    I am particularly proud today to announce the official launch of HORSE Powertrain Limited, a joint venture consolidating the divisions HORSE from Renault Group and #Aurobay (Aurobay China & Aurobay Sweden) from GEELY, creating this incredible, innovative and one of the kind company with the capability, know-how and expertise to develop ultra-low emission internal combustion engines (#ICE), and #hybrid technologies. To meet our industry’s future net zero aspirations, we are convinced that a combination of various powertrain technologies is necessary. HORSE Powertrain Limited is set to answer this demand for cleaner thermal & hybrid mobility solutions, providing accessible, relevant, and decarbonised options across all regions and for all customers.    Our collaboration extends beyond technology, emphasizing a strategic partnership that leverages global synergies and gathering the best talents to meet the ambitious goals of reducing emissions and enhancing #sustainability in #automotive production.     An exciting journey starts now, and I couldn't be more honored to join and lead our great team of over 19,000 people, around the world and across 10 countries and over 22 sites. Volvo Produces 100,000 EX30 EVs Within 10 Months Of Launch The compact electric SUV has been on the verge of launching in North America for a while now The Volvo EX30 has turned out to be a massive success for the Geely-owned Swedish auto giant. Volvo has been renowned for making some of the safest cars out there. After Geely acquired the biggest share in Volvo in 2010, the Swedish car marque found a base for manufacturing in China. In fact, Volvo’s luxury electric division, Polestar, also utilized that base to flood the international markets with its luxury EVs. However, after the recent tariffs from Europe and the U.S., Volvo is planning to shift a large chunk of its manufacturing to Europe in Ghent, Belgium. #volvo #volvoex30 #ex30 #electriccars #electricvehicles https://lnkd.in/gB5-2a-K

This one is interesting. Polestar's origins begin with Flash Engineering, a Swedish racing team founded by Jan 'Flash' Nilsson in 1996. The team initially competed in the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) with Volvo Cars. In 2005, they rebranded as Polestar Racing after Christian Dahl acquired them. In 2015, Volvo acquired Polestar Performance, some five years after GEELY's acquisition of Volvo from Ford Motor Company. In this article, I believe we are seeing some of the homogenization I discussed in this blog post: 'The Steady March Towards Homogenization in the Automotive Industry' (https://lnkd.in/ebgMxa9k), as what was once a performance product loses its differentiation and just becomes another luxury brand offering among many. Essentially, who cares about Polestar? If all EVs are performance monsters doling out massive amounts of torque, handling becomes the major point of concentration in such an incarnation. Moreover, if the designs are mostly body-on-skateboard and shared between models at that, then suspension components, aesthetics, and software-defined features become the only differentiators, in my mind. I'm sure some will disagree, but that's okay; as a gearhead (is that even the right term anymore?), I enjoy the discussion. So, in this case, Volvo hands the reins back to Geely and says, 'I see no value in supporting this brand, as I have my own problems to deal with.' Volvo's stock saw a bump as a result of the news, so that's a positive for them. Toyota has been involved in alternative propulsion methods for many years, including hydrogen, and they have already tested it in many types of vehicles, from an elegant sedan like the Mirai that we have already seen in Argentina, to a pick-up like the Hilux, which is getting closer and closer, and even some race cars like a prototype of the GR Corolla, but the brand is aiming for more. Apparently, Toyota would be aiming to launch a street sports car like the GR Yaris, but with a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain; and that is why it is presenting the GR Yaris H2 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024.
