"You are so negative". What if I told you in response that you are reckless? Neither is a reasonable claim in most cases. But they are strong indicators for very different views how to handle the unexpected. If your job is about talking with people in sales, and you have enough experience, you can handle unforeseen events without much (if any) upfront preparation. But if you work in a technical capacity that is usually not an option. Instead you need to anticipate all possible (and serious enough) error conditions and handle them in one way or another. If the sound system in your car dies, well that is not nice. Yet nobody will die. But what about the breaks or the steering? When a friend was interviewed for his first job (software for electronic car break systems around the year 2000) he was asked: How do you deal with the fact that people die, if you make a mistake? I found this piece of advice from Will Larson in an interview by Gergely Orosz one of the most insightful I've ever read: What’s your advice for software engineers ambitious to be a Head of Engineering, VP of Engineering, or CTO? ‘Spend more time understanding why people’s perspectives are “right,” rather than why they’re “wrong.” I think of this as extracting the core of what people say.

Green flags on your first week as a Software Engineer ✅ 0. Your boss (or reasonable cover) is there to welcome you in your first day 1. You have your laptop and it is a good spec or of your preference (Mac/Surface etc) 2. You have a welcome call with your team mates to meet everyone on your first day. 3. You have onboarding meetings scheduled in the upcoming days/weeks. 4. You can get your environment up and running pretty much instantly. 5. There are docs and videos you are able to work through to understand the product. 6. You have time with your boss to set expectations for the upcoming months. 7. You are able to shadow your colleagues to see how they work. 8. You don't need to fight for permission to get access to the things you need to do your job. 9. If you're local to the office, a team lunch is always nice too 😁 What do you think are green flags?
