🔎 In Focus: Shipowners face major challenges as new fuel regulations enter force. In our latest episode of the Seatrade Maritime Podcast, we focus on the new emissions regulations shipowners have to comply with. Our correspondent Paul Bartlett examines the significance of 2024 in the light of these new regulations. Although their full impact has not been felt so far, they will alter day-to-day ship management and require an unprecedented level of ship performance monitoring, verification, and reporting, known as MRV. Can shipping move forward on deep shipping decarbonisation and will there be enough hydrogen derived fuels (green ammonia and methanol) available for the shipping industry while competing with other hard-to-abate industries for the green hydrogen. This was discussed with #Richard Meade in the recent Lloyds List Podcast... The shipping industry in a full decarbonisation pathway will be needing about 600 million tonnes of green fuels per annum. The big challenge for the global shipping market is that other industries that needs green hydrogen in its own green transitions (non electrifiable industries such as steel, refineries, etc) will be competing for this precious green commodity... We need IMO to agree on a significant carbon pricing mechanism/levy so the industry can bridge the cost gap vs the otherwise much cheaper fossil fuels.
