My Marketing hero this last 18 months has been Rory Sutherland I am by training a Data and Tech guy - maths degree, IT trained, 23 years composing data platforms, attribution targeting systems and the like. A good part of marketing is the data. Yet the idea is still the most important. Data can sometimes tell you if something worked but rarely why it worked. That I always thought takes logic and creativity. Rory Sutherlands book Alchemy and podcast has broadened my horizons. I already knew elementary psychology and behavioural science yet he showed how this drives almost everything. The application is clearly to the creative idea but also solving any business problem. As an entrepreneur and strategist in later parts of my career I love solving problems. Take the challenges of Fraud or Last Click attribution. Many are trying to use technology to solve it. Whereas actually its all about changing human behaviour first, the tech comes after. I urge you all to seek out his books and podcasts. I have no skin in this game other than the pleasure of finding a new powerful toolset to solve problems. The world will be a better place if more take this on.

Nilay Patel, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Verge, warns that the flood of AI-generated content poses an existential threat to the internet.  In a recent interview, Patel explained how the incredible scale of AI output is overwhelming recommendation algorithms. It is undermining business models, and making it impossible to distinguish real from fake. "When you increase the supply of stuff onto those platforms to infinity, that system breaks down," Patel cautions. Mediocre AI-generated articles, videos, books and other content are polluting search results, social media feeds and online marketplaces. While many hoped AI would enhance and augment human-created content, Patel believes it is more likely to displace it. Especially since the incentives of big tech platforms are misaligned. Google and others are invested in AI while depending on the health of the digital content ecosystem. "I don't think Google can discern what is good or bad about the web," says Patel. What comes next? Patel envisions a split between a "giant commercial AI-infested internet" controlled by the major platforms and a separate "human" internet that rejects AI.  But he sees promise in new social networks. And content distribution models rising from the ashes of what AI destroys. The path forward is uncertain. But it's becoming clear that AI will reshape the internet.
