Manufacturing is cool….I always loved sand casting. This video is a masterpiece as it offers us time to reflect on the concept of Quality. I can see experienced craftsmen, simple repeatable steps, tooling with descent locating points and a controlled setup for final dimensioning. If the steel making process is properly controlled then the whole cycle has my approval….plus it seems to be paperless. Not all industries need a clean room type environment to operate or a 1000 units per day capacity. Not all products need a 6 sigma failure rate. Not all industries need LMS along with in-class training and SOJT. Not all industries need Hollolens devices or AI powered step-by-step digital projection system…actually I think no industry needs these tech but that’s up for another discussion. Not all industries need RFID tracking systems for employees and parts. Not all industries need to capture 50 000 datasets per hour and crunch them in endless analytics. I agree that we can question the HSE but that is an entirely different field of discussion. Feel free to comment.

Wow, Incredible Manufacturing Process of a Huge Industrial Gear! There must be better ways to cast/machine such a big gear?! Video: Visual Feast
I chose metallurgy as my profession as an engineer 45 years ago, precisely because it's a skilful blend of science, technology and craftsmanship. To the uninitiated, these steps seem obvious, easy and straightforward... but each step requires a precise calculation of the expansions and contractions, as well as the changes in behavior and crystalline structures of the various materials involved and in contact, when they are heated or cooled, compacted or machined, in order to give a casted part that is perfect in terms of dimensions, porosity, strength, finish, and so on. Great art!
