In September of 2023, Florida Nonprofit Alliance and the Jessie du Pont Ball Foundation released Growing Generosity in Florida: Giving Groups Under 45. This report provides actionable insights for nonprofit organizations, donors, and policy makers about the dynamics of individual givers across Florida. In this study, we focused exclusively on younger people (adults aged 18-45) in order to generate insights about how to best attract and retain them as lifelong givers Analyzing generosity through the lens of distinct giving groups allows nonprofits to rethink and reorient their messaging to their audiences to attract new donors or reach former donors in new ways. The Center for Effective Philanthropy’s report on the impact of MacKenzie Scott’s groundbreaking unrestricted giving is available. The entire report is worth reading, but below are some things that stood out for me: ▶️ Inherent in this study’s structure is the fact that the nonprofit recipients were trusted as experts on the impact of these gifts. The nonprofits themselves, not external evaluators, were given the opportunity to report on their experiences with the gift. ▶️ This quote: “It is so refreshing as a veteran nonprofit person to have a donor say, ‘You know what? It’s up to me, it’s my responsibility to do the research about who I want to support. It’s not up to the charities to prove to me why I should support them, and I’m going to do this in a very organized, methodical, and data-driven way.’” ▶️ This quote: “It has emboldened us to be more strategic in fundraising by giving us a cushion to be more selective about restricted grants. This will put us in a much stronger strategic position going forward as we will be able to focus on funding that is better aligned with our strategy.” #nonprofit #mackenziescott #philanthropy

Looking back on the last four years, we couldn’t have predicted how the pandemic changed all of our lives. It affected our economy in so many ways, especially the nonprofit sector. These critical organizations worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic while watching for profit businesses get support while nonprofits were rarely eligible for the funding.
