Alright Folks, heads up! Traffic changes are coming to Hexham, Newcastle NSW this week due to the Hexham Straight Widening project. Night Work Schedule: When: 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday, ending Friday, July 19 (weather permitting). Traffic Adjustments: Contraflow: Inbound lane to Newcastle with a 40km/h speed limit from Newcastle Inner City Bypass to Ironbark Creek Bridge (July 14-18). Turn Lane Closures: Right-hand turns into Newcastle Inner City Bypass closed; detour via Wallsend Road. Speed Limits: 60km/h during the day, 40km/h at night in work zones. Oversize Vehicle Instructions: Contact project team a day ahead at 1800 515 141 if your vehicle is over 3.2m wide. Stick to approved routes or update your permit. Plan Ahead: Follow signs and traffic controllers. Use alternative routes or add 15 minutes to your travel time. Extra Night Work: Intersections at Jesmond, Wallsend, Cameron Park: Starting July 17, expect three-night shifts over two weeks. Roundabouts and Surveys: Work at Newcastle Link Road intersections and Minmi Road. Many councillors ran on a campaign of transparency. None have been transparent on this issue. It came out of nowhere and isn't even provisioned for in the budget. If not for the budget speech no-one would be aware of it. They have not provided costings for this project, what is the actual cost to implement (purchase of equipment + installation cost), how will local business be impacted during installation. Strand expected to be operational by 6/01/2025 which means works to be completed during Spring/Summer...Councillors are aware our peak tourism season that sees cruise ships coming to our city kicks off in November right? Strand parking will be detrimentally impacted during summer including Christmas to have this completed by the 6/01. Somehow a motion to pause the project has seen the entire project approved for go ahead. No Costs, no transparency... Brady Ellis Cr. I BIKE Dublin welcomes the decision by the government to proceed with the Department of Transport’s plans to reform the Road Safety Authority. Last April we were one of over 30 community groups from around the country who signed a statement of no confidence in the organisation as it is currently constituted. Separating the licensing and testing role from the Road Safety role is essential, in our view, to provide proper focus on road safety. The new entity tasked with road safety campaigns must provide an independent voice on effective, evidence-based measures to reduce road deaths and injuries. It is essential that a new approach to road safety is underpinned with adequately resourced expertise in disciplines such as public health, sustainable transport, data analysis, and road safety design and engineering. The lack of this expertise within the RSA has undermined its efforts to effect a modern Safe Systems approach to road safety.
